GENERO ADRAN TROPHY NORTH 1

Llanfair United 4 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 5

An injury-time winner from Laura Williams sent Rhyl 1879 into the last 16 of the Adran Trophy at the expense of Llanfair.

It was a thrilling ending to a cracking tie which saw the visitors go 4-3 down in the second half, only to fight back and grab the honours in the 93rd minute.

Having beaten Llangefni Town 12-0 and unluckily lost 2-1 at home to Wrexham, Rhyl finish second in group North 1.

1879 came into today’s game on the back of a demoralising 10-0 Welsh Cup defeat seven days earlier.

Rhyl captain Rachael Thomas said after the game: “The girls reacted just as we wanted after a heavy defeat last week. We stuck together and fought to gain a fantastic win in bad conditions. The girls tried to play football when they could and they were committed with what they had to do.”

The visitors started really well, playing some great football. Their first goal came after just two minutes from some great build up play which saw Laura Williams play a pinpoint pass to Candice Nellist, who stayed composed and finished well by drilling into the bottom corner across the keeper.

Alicia Duke scored with a cracking header for Rhyl 1879

Llanfair levelled through Harriet Davies from a Mary Griffiths corner, but the away side regained the lead on 15 minutes.

More fantastic football forced keeper Ffion Davies to make a save, resulting in a corner. Skipper Thomas took the flag kick and Alicia Duke met the ball perfectly to head home.

Thomas made it 3-1 from a corner which was swung to the back post and the Llanfair defender could not keep it out.

Four minutes before the break, another corner led to a goal, this time for United as Jodie Carswell applied the finish.

Half-time: Llanfair 2-3 Rhyl 1879

Into the second half and the visitors swapped keepers, bringing on Bethan Thomas for Loz Jones, while Niomi Taylor replaced Nellist.

Llanfair’s Hannah Davies was on fire at the start of the half, scoring twice in four minutes to put the Powys girls 4-3 ahead.

Rhyl dug deep and tried to respond with more quality football, although this proved difficult given the wet pitch.

However, the away side did manage to make it 4-4 on the hour with a brilliant goal.

Duke picked out Thomas with a fine pass and the captain lofted a cross towards the back post where Taylor equalised with a tremendous header.

Llanfair made four substitutions, believing fresh legs could win the day, but Rhyl persisted and deep into added time Rachael Thomas played in Laura Williams, who pushed the ball round the keeper, pulled it back onto her left foot and buried it in the bottom corner.

Wrexham 11 Llangefni Town 0

Wrexham finished top of the group after as expected beating a Llangefni side from a league below and with vastly less competitive football experience.

Goals: Rosie Hughes (3, 1 pen), Libby MacKenzie (2), Katie Sharp, Kimberley Dutton, Rebecca Pritchard, Ava Suckley, Lauryn Lyons and an unfortunate own goal from Nia Ginnelly as she tried to clear a free kick.

Nothing to be ashamed of for Llangefni, they are making good progress at their own level.

Youngster Erin Doran netted her first competitive goal for Llandudno’s senior team to round off a comfortable victory for the Seasiders at Y Morfa, Conwy.

Tudno will finish at least second in group North 2 and advance to the last 16.

Forced into making a few changes from the squad which beat Rhyl 1879 10-0 in the Welsh Cup the weekend before, Llandudno were grateful to Conwy Borough for the use of their pitch with Maesdu Park still not available due to safety issues.

Sarah Colville’s side made a strong start and were in front after just five minutes.

Following a scramble in the box, the ball was played out wide for Indie Hassall to deliver a cross and Ffion Owen’s strike found the bottom-left corner.

On the half-hour Llandudno doubled their score with a magnificent 25-yard free kick from Mari Gibbard – her 14th goal of the season.

In the 38th minute Kelsey Davies crossed and Stacey Tradewell headed into the path of Maddie Williams, who slotted home for number three.

No further goals until the 74th minute when Tradewell’s fine shot was saved well by Ceri Evams, but the 16-year-old Doran was there right on cue to make it 4-0.

Another glut of goals for 1876 made it a ridiculous 60 in seven games for the league leaders.

Substitute Awel Ellis bagged a late hat-trick, there were two apiece from Cerys Parry, Jenna Allsup, Stevie Donougher, Ceri Thomas and Ella Jones, while Sophie Allsop added a single.

Winning manager Aron Griffith said: “Very proud of that performance today, another win under our belts and a well deserved one. We kept battling from start to finish and our football today was untouchable.

“With seven different goal scorers, it proves we play passing football and are not selfish in front of goal. I can speak on Lois (Regan) and Lefty’s (Wright) part that we are loving the way the girls are playing and the passion and determination they give in training and on match day.

“Also big sound out to our groundsman Cefyn for looking after the pitch beforehand as it was in near perfect condition is this weather.”

Caernarfon Town 3 Northop Hall 5

A great game between two well-matched sides produced eight goals.

Northop Hall took the points thanks to Sarah Massey (2), Taylor Roberts, Brygida Gorecka and Ellen Sharps, but Caernarfon pushed their opponents hard, Lisa Jones netting twice and captain Sara Williams also on target.

A much-celebrated first away win of the season for Trearddur Bay lifted them up to sixth in the table.

An even start to the match saw both sides having a share of the possession and taking equal shots at goal.

Bay broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when a good through ball from Gemma Thomas found Freya Davies, who calmly slotted past the keeper.

A lapse in the back allowed Flint to equalise through Tara Davies in the 26th minute.

Soon after Freya Davies scored another well-taken goal for the Anglesey visitors.

Davies then went from scorer to provider, assisting Rhian Griffiths, who hit a low drive into the bottom corner for her first goal of the season in the 44th minute, making it 3-1 to Trearddur at the break.

The start of the second half saw chances for both sides but no goals until on 66 minutes Jess Collings converted a penalty for Flint.

The next goal was vital and it came to Bay, Davies with a second assist resulting in Sarah Flower bagging her first of the season, which was deserved for all her hard work.

A great volley on 87 minutes from Sinead Beck cut the arrears to 4-3, but Trearddur held on for the win.

Bay manager Mark Parry said after the game: “A great confidence boost for everyone to finally take maximum points from an away game. A tough game on a poor pitch and conditions which was out of Flint’s hands due to other fixtures forcing them to move pitches.

“I am pleased for all our goal scorers today and for everyone giving their all again this week. The win pushes us up to sixth and we have nearly reached the same amount of goals that we scored all of last season which shows a big improvement going forward.”
