Sarah Massey is one of the key figures guiding the progress of Holywell FC Ladies and Girls, who are in their second season in the North Wales Women’s League.
An experienced player, Sarah was a quality performer for Kinmel Bay before joining newly-formed Holywell in 2019-20.
This week Sarah, who celebrated her latest birthday on December 10, spoke to Grassroots North Wales for our Female Football Focus 2021 feature.

School P.E lessons introduced me to football. I have continued ever since.
I have been playing since high school so 12-ish
I have always played in a midfield position either central or on the wing
I train with football once a week and do my own fitness training alongside it.
When I’m not playing football I’m up a mountain or in the pub
I don’t spend much time shopping to be honest, I do most of it online at various shops.
I don’t have one female footballer I admire, I think any female to create a name for themselves in the football world is an achievement although Angharad James is one of my favourites at the moment
I listen to all types of music but mainly house.
I will always welcome change to the women’s league as long as it’s taking steps forward.
There has been many great games of football I have played in, but the one that sticks out for me is when Holywell ladies, who most had never played football before, scored their first ever goal and we celebrated like we had just won a league final. (goal by Ruby McGilloway – away to Mountain Rangers, September 15, 2019)
My biggest achievement I think is going over to the Isle of Man to represent North Wales when I was younger.
I don’t watch much TV, so I don’t follow any soaps.
I had a holiday to Italy booked in January but that’s been cancelled so I think I’ll just try to rearrange that one.
I have a Springer Spaniel, he is 3
A medic in the army or forensic scientist.
As a female footballer I would just like to continue to work with the younger age groups within the club and keep building interest within the sport
