Sarah Massey is one of the key figures guiding the progress of Holywell FC Ladies and Girls, who are in their second season in the North Wales Women’s League.

An experienced player, Sarah was a quality performer for Kinmel Bay before joining newly-formed Holywell in 2019-20.

This week Sarah, who celebrated her latest birthday on December 10, spoke to Grassroots North Wales for our Female Football Focus 2021 feature.

How did you become interested in football?

School P.E lessons introduced me to football. I have continued ever since.

How long have you been playing the game?

I have been playing since high school so 12-ish

Have you always played in the position you play now?

I have always played in a midfield position either central or on the wing

What is your training schedule like?

I train with football once a week and do my own fitness training alongside it.

If you are not playing football or not working, what do you do in your spare time?

When I’m not playing football I’m up a mountain or in the pub

Do you like shopping? What are your favourite stores?

I don’t spend much time shopping to be honest, I do most of it online at various shops.

Which female footballer do you admire most?

I don’t have one female footballer I admire, I think any female to create a name for themselves in the football world is an achievement although Angharad James is one of my favourites at the moment

What musical styles do you enjoy listening to?

I listen to all types of music but mainly house.

What are your feelings on the women’s football pyramid changes in Wales this season?

I will always welcome change to the women’s league as long as it’s taking steps forward.

Tell us about the greatest game you’ve played in

There has been many great games of football I have played in, but the one that sticks out for me is when Holywell ladies, who most had never played football before, scored their first ever goal and we celebrated like we had just won a league final. What’s your finest achievement to date as a footballer?

My biggest achievement I think is going over to the Isle of Man to represent North Wales when I was younger.

Do you watch TV soaps? If so, who is your favourite character?

I don’t watch much TV, so I don’t follow any soaps.

Any holiday plans?

I had a holiday to Italy booked in January but that’s been cancelled so I think I’ll just try to rearrange that one.

Do you have any pets?

I have a Springer Spaniel, he is 3

What would be your dream job?

A medic in the army or forensic scientist.

What do you hope to achieve in future as a footballer?

As a female footballer I would just like to continue to work with the younger age groups within the club and keep building interest within the sport
