Sunday was a happy occasion for both Holywell and Llangefni for differing reasons.

Holywell were delighted to be playing their first match at Pen-y-Gelli, which they share with Carmel Cricket Club.

Llangefni, meanwhile, were overjoyed to record their first away win as a club in the North Wales Women’s League.

Cefni, targeting a second win of the season, started brightly, learning from their flat start against Northop in match week 3.

Starting without top goalscorer Jen Cox, Ellie Coulson began up top and after 23 minutes played Hannah Owen in to make it 1-0 to Llangefni.

Four minutes later captain Nia Ginnelly laid a pass off for Tash Jones to beat the keeper from distance with a beautiful strike.

Then on minutes 35 and 55, Sian Elin Morgan-Price scored with two wonderful individual efforts, the second being a contender for goal of the season for Llangefni Ladies, cutting in and wrapping her foot around the ball and whipping it into the very top corner.

Coulson was then played through by an in-form Tash Jones and Ellie topped a brilliant performance off with a goal to show there is life in Llangefni even with Jen Cox out.

The match finished 5-2 and Holywell for 90 minutes were never truly out of the game. They battled and battled all game, never letting Llangefni think it was over.

Holywell line up before their historic game

Sarah Massey and Zoe Stopford got the well-deserved goals for the Wellwomen.

Player of the match for Llangefni was Hannah Owen and for Holywell, it was Sarah Massey.

Cefni manager Dan Gregg said: “The ladies bounced back brilliantly today, we’ve talked since the Northop game about our flat start to the match and how important it is to start a game right and the ladies certainly showed that today.

“We worked hard in training on Friday night, on a new style of play with Jen out injured and Ellie having completely different attributes. I thought Ellie played her role perfectly today using her height well and linking up play with Sian and Tash.

This was an important 3 points before going into a big derby game with Amlwch Town on Sunday.”
