Premier Division

Gwalchmai 0-1 Trearddur Bay

A battle of two Anglesey ‘superpowers’ went the way of unbeaten Trearddur Bay, who overcame the absence of key players to edge a narrow victory over the Premier Division leaders.

More than 400 supporters were at Maes Meurig to witness one of the biggest occasions of the season in Tier 4 football, the attendance dwarfing five of six Cymru Premier matches played on Saturday.

The Beach Boys were missing three players through suspension, Tom Scott, Coby Doutch and the prolific Asa Thomas all having to sit it out on the sideline.

Midfield general Jay Gibbs was also deemed not fit enough to start, but was included on the bench.

Gwalch posed the fiirst big threat when they won a free kick just outside the area which Marc Evans drilled towards the bottom left corner, but Bay keeper Paul Pritchard got a hand to it and turned it around the post.

Both teams battled well but neither were making any clear chances. Half time 0-0.

Bay’s Mel McGinness had to come off due to an injury and was replaced by Gibbs.

It was difficult to play the ball about on the wet surface, but credit to the Gwalchmai groundsman to get it in a playable condition with all the recent weather.

Trearddur started to make some half-chances and worked Gwalchmai keeper Caron Hughes a couple of times.

It was on the 65th minute when Matty Reynolds broke the deadlock. A great corner from Gibbs was delivered right under the crossbar, Hughes managed to get a hand to it and pushed it out only for the ball to fall to Reynolds, who hit it on the half volley through the crowd and into the net.

As the home team pushed for an equaliser it was leaving gaps at the back which Bay tried to take advantage of.

The visitors hit the post and also had a penalty denied when Matty Jones appeared to be pushed over in the box.

Special mention to three new Bay signings making their debuts in a tough game – Casey Gregg, Callum Mcminimee and James Couchman.
