Trearddur Bay booked their place in the next round of the FAW Amateur Trophy with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over local rivals Llangefni Town in a fiercely contested derby.

Bay came into the game in remarkable goalscoring form, having found the net 48 times across their previous eight matches.

However, Llangefni proved a much sterner test, limiting Bay to just two goals on the night in a game where both sides had chances to take control.

Llangefni goalkeeper Rhys Jones was kept busy throughout and produced a number of excellent saves, while some missed opportunities at both ends meant the score remained goalless despite chances being created.

Bay came closest to breaking the deadlock after 20 minutes when Iolo Hughes’ long ball sent Joe Todd through on goal. Todd showed great composure to lift the ball over the advancing Jones, only to see his effort drift narrowly wide.

Llangefni continued to threaten and had plenty of chances of their own but Bay’s defence stood firm.

Just before the break, Trearddur Bay had another good opportunity when Iolo Hughes rose highest to meet a corner, but his header flew just over the crossbar.

The second half was just seven minutes old when Llangefni went close to taking the lead. Confusion in the Trearddur defence opened the door for an opportunity to get behind Dan Williams, but the shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Bay finally found the breakthrough on 62 minutes.

Ashley Ainsworth laid the ball off to Todd just outside the penalty area, and he unleashed a superb strike which flew beyond the goalkeeper’s grasp and into the top corner.

Llangefni refused to go quietly and came agonisingly close to an equaliser with 10 minutes remaining. A ball into the box took an unfortunate touch off Thomas Lennon, sending it towards his own goal, but thankfully for him it struck the crossbar and was cleared to safety.

With Llangefni pushing forward in search of an equaliser late on, Bay found the space to deliver the decisive blow, when deep into added time, substitute Sebastian Samuel broke through into the box and confidently rifled the ball into the roof of the net to seal the victory and send the Beach Boys into the next round
