Welsh Cup preview: Can Y Felinheli cause a huge upset at home to Cymru Premier Newtown?

CPD Y Felinheli will welcome the Sgorio TV cameras to Cae Seilo tomorrow for their high-profile Welsh Cup second-round tie at home to Cymru Premier side Newtown.

Prestige-wise, it will be the biggest match in the Tier 3 club’s 46-year history, but Felinheli manager Euron Davies insists there have been much more important games for the Ardal North West underdogs over the decades.

“On paper it’s probably the biggest game for the club in its history, but on the pitch there been many more big games,” said Davies, who first took over the team in 2011/12.

Newtown are currently third in the top-flight and are coming off the back of an impressive 4-0 win over Caernarfon Town last weekend.

However, the Robins have shown a lot of vulnerability in the Welsh Cup in recent seasons, having been victims of giant-killings quite a few times, including a 3-2 defeat at Tier 3 Holywell Town in 2013-14, when Johnny Haseldin’s men made it all the way to the semis.

Nonetheless, a home win at Cae Seilo on Saturday would be a huge upset.

Felinheli are fifth bottom of Ardal North West, but achieved a fine 2-1 victory at Pwllheli in the last round.

Davies added: “It’s a great opportunity to show what CPD Felinheli and the whole village is all about, day’s like these are what we’ve worked hard for over the last few years.

“Cae Seilo could be a leveller on the day. With the rain that’s promised the conditions could be tricky which will probably play in our favour.

“We’ll be going into the game truly as underdogs, but you never know! We’ve trained hard this week and are looking forward to the game.”

Under Davies, Felin have risen from tier 6 to tier 3 and have won the Caernarfon and District League, Gwynedd League and Welsh Alliance Division Two titles en route, as well as the NWCFA Junior Cup twice.

A good crowd is expected and S4C will be filming the tie as part of their weekend Welsh Cup coverage.
