Colwyn Bay’s women cricketers win national final

Huge well done to national Plate winners Colwyn Bay

Winners of the first-ever Women’s Welsh Cup Hundred Ball Plate competition – Colwyn Bay CC take a bow.

Julie Russell’s star maidens were the toast of North Wales as they landed a major prize on national finals day at Vale Cricket Club, Bridgend.

The Bay beat Bronwydd by just five runs in the semi-final, then defeated Panteg by 26 runs in the final.

Semi-final

Colwyn Bay 90-7 (Net score 255) Bronwydd 70-4 (Net score 250)

Put into bat by their Carmarthenshire opponents, the Bay made 90-7, Jane Smith top-scoring with 17 and Hannah Kennedy adding 11.

In reply, Bronwydd could only manage 70-4 in the face of some excellent North Wales bowling.

Sue Wolfendale took 2-15 and there was a wicket each for Kerry Roberts and Sammie Sherrington. The winning margin was just 5 runs.

Final

Panteg 76-7 (net score 241) Colwyn Bay 102-7 (net score 267)

Bay won the toss and invited Gwent side Panteg to bat.

Celebration time!

Sue Wolfendale put in another great bowling display, taking 3-15, while Amy Kennedy collected 1-14 as Panteg posted 76-7 for a net score of 241.

Bay responded with a winning 102-7 (267 net), Hannah Kennedy top-scoring with 10 and there were numerous other useful contributions.

A great day for North Wales cricket and especially for Colwyn Bay CC.
