Stunning win for St Asaph over class opposition in national cricket competition

Duncan Midgley hit a ton for St Asaph against the might of Shrewsbury

St Asaph’s cricketers did North Wales immensely proud when they beat a strong Shrewsbury side at Elwy Park Grove in an ECB National Club Championship thriller.

The North Wales League Premier Division champions were taking on Birmingham and District Premier League opposition in group 7 of the national competition.

While always expected to represent the north well, Saints were definitely second favourites entering the game, but they produced something special on their home ground.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts set a formidable 283 with Duncan Midgley and skipper Will Ryan putting on 220 for the opening wicket facing some very good Shropshire bowling.

Midgley struck 124 and Ryan 108 in one of the most epic stands the club has ever produced.

Shrewsbury gave it a mightily good go in reply, but finished two runs short on 282-9 in an exhilarating chase.

Danny Ryan picked up three wickets and Gareth Goodson two for the Saints. Jurie Norval, Jason Foulkes, Jack Griffiths and Elliott Morris claimed one apiece. Saints now play Longton away in the next round.

It completed a great weekend for the home side, who thrashed Llay Welfare 15-0 on Saturday to go joint top of the Premier Division.

More on this game and others to follow in Grassroots North Wales’ comprehensive cricket round-ups.
