The darkest day for Caernarfon Town since their latest return to Welsh Premier

Caernarfon have had a few bleak afternoons in their Welsh Premier past, but today’s performance at Penybont must rank as their worst since returning to the top flight in 2018.

In some games where they have picked up 1 or 0 points this season, it is fair to say the Canaries have been unlucky not to reap a richer reward.

This afternoon in Bridgend, however, Town got exactly what they deserved after a lacklustre display where they were second best in every department.

While Huw Griffiths’ side were poor, the home side must also be commended for a great attacking effort where they could have run up double figures.

Rhys Griffiths’ men are more than worthy of the top six spot they occupy at present.

Penybont were on top from the start, the outstanding Mael Davies forcing keeper Tyler Davies to beat away an early attempt.

In the 14th minute the hosts were in front. A corner from the left was flicked on, Ismail Yakubu’s diving header was magnificently palmed onto the bar by French, but Kostya Georgievsky was the most alert to convert the loose ball.

Caernarfon’s only real chance of the game arrived on the half-hour. Jack Kenny did well to win a physical battle with Yakubu and Maes Davies, but with the goal at his mercy, he lashed over.

Penybont had a goal ruled out when Nathan Wood found the net, but Benjamin Ahmun was adjudged to be standing in an offside position.

The home side were not to be denied, though, as in added time Ahmun pressurised Michael Parker into a mistake and Lewis Harling passed majestically into the net.

Half-time: 2-0

Penybont were on fire from the restart, Ashley Evans’ drive pushed away by French before Harling sent a rocket just wide.

French just managed to hold onto a Wood effort, but a third home goal looked a certainty and so it was.

On 56 minutes Georgievsky sprang the offside trap to expertly guide the ball into the right-hand corner of the goal.

Goal number four for Penybont was an embarrassment to the visitors. Georgievsky crossed from the right and Harling had time to make a cup of tea before picking his spot past the hapless French.

The 70th minute brought a fifth goal, Ahmun drilling a low volley beyond the overworked Town keeper.

And the sixth arrived on 76 minutes, sub Ian Traylor coolly volleying home from a Wood cross via the left.

Caernarfon tried for a consolation, but Michael Hayes and sub Darren Thomas both had efforts blocked.

With Ashley Morris, the Penybont keeper, not having to make a single save, it was an emphatic win for the home side and an occasion to quickly forget for the Cofis.
