Colwyn Bay earned their first win over Caernarfon Town since returning to the Welsh system when they beat the Cofis 1-0 at the Blue Turtle Arena on Saturday.
Since rejoining the Welsh pyramid in 2019-20, Bay had met Town just three times before the weekend.
That was in the 2023-24 season, when the Seagulls competed in the Cymru Premier for the first time and lost 4-0 at home and 2-1 away to the Canaries, and then earlier this term, when Town beat Mike Wilde’s men 3-0 in the Nathaniel MG Cup.
Prior to that, it is believed (not 100% confirmed) the clubs had not locked horns since 1992-93, when Bay defeated Caernarfon 4-1 in the FA Cup first qualifying round. The tie was played at Curzon Ashton due to both clubs having opted to go into exile to remain in the Northern Premier League. That was the Seagulls’ last win over Caernarfon until October 4, 2025.
They also met in the FA Cup in 1991-92, when both were in Northern Premier League Division One and Bay were crowned champions. Bay triumphed 2-1 in a replay after the first meeting ended 1-1.
After that campaign, Bay were promoted to the Premier and Caernarfon remained in Division 1 until switching to the Welsh pyramid in 1995-96. Bay did not join them until 23 years later.
So to Saturday, where Bay halted a run of three Cymru Premier games without a victory by edging past the Cofis 1-0.
The only goal came after 22 minutes, when Ethan Roberts’ cross was turned onto the post by Caernarfon midfielder Matty Jones and Louis Robles was waiting to score on the rebound from close range.
Things got worse for Town nine minutes before half-time when captain Danny Gosset was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Aeron Edwards.
With the man advantage, Bay saw out the second half to secure the points and climb back into the top half.
Defeat for Caernarfon means they remain third and are now six points behind leaders The New Saints.
Nomads climbed up to fourth in the table with a 3-0 victory over lowly Llanelli at the Essity Stadium on Saturday.
John Disney’s men found the breakthrough in first half stoppage time as 18-year-old Jacob Cook tapped home from a yard out after Ben Nash had poked Callum West’s corner back across goal.
Two stunning strikes sealed victory in the second half, as West curled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box before Harry Franklin cut in from the left and fired in an unstoppable effort. The result also marked the Nomads’ first clean sheet at home this season.
