It must be a very rare occurrence for a grandfather and grandson to play competitive football in the same team.
But that is what happened when Anglesey League side Arriva Bangor took to the field for their Rawson Digital Elias Cup first round tie against Llandegfan on Friday night.
Grandad Stephen Edwards, 56, and grandson Jake Hughes, 16, both lined up for the home side.
Arriva manager Kevin Jones said: “I’m so proud of how they work together. I’m sure Jake worries what to call his grandad on the pitch – Steve or taid!”
Kevin added: “They are two of the nicest players you could meet. Stephen is on his third season with the club. His attitude, ability and commitment is priceless to the club and unquestionable. He’s not missed a single training session or game last two seasons – and I’m sure I will get the same again this season .
“Jake is a very talented player with bags of potential; he is the youngest player I have ever signed at Arriva Bangor FC.
“He played in many of our pre-season games and showed his ability to play men’s football with ease against Menai Bridge, Llanfairfechan and many more and displayed his capabilities. He is a big player for Arriva going forward.”
The pair’s first game together went well as Arriva defeated Llandegfan 4-1, Scott Hughes scoring a hat-trick and Lewis Hall a single.
Saturday’s Anglesey League action saw Llanfairpwll edge a thrilling encounter at Holyhead Town Reserves 4-3.
Luke Miles and Liam Owen (2) struck for the home side, but Llanfair pocketed the points thanks to the goals of Gareth Roberts, Gethin Williams and Tom Zalot (2). ‘Pwll led 3-0 at one stage.
Y Fali came out on top 2-1 at Pentraeth Reserves.
Owain Roberts and Tudur Williams were the away marksmen, Tom Jones for the hosts.
Cefni versus Mountain Rangers in the Rawson Digital Elias Cup was postponed due to an unmarked pitch.
On Friday night, Steven Whittaker scored all four goals for Cemaes Bay in a thrilling 4-3 victory at Holyhead Hotspur Reserves in the Rawson Digital Elias Cup first round.
Casey Gregg, Alex Jones, who was later dismissed for two yellow cards, and Luke Owen grabbed one goal apiece for Hotspur.
