Colwyn Bay 149-2 (Sion Morris 84 no, Will Higginson 31 no)
Mochdre 163-3 (Matthew Humphreys 67 no, Gareth Goodson 44)
Welsh Cup third round
Mochdre won by 14 runs
Skipper Matthew Humphreys hit a decisive unbeaten 67 as Mochdre set up a home Welsh Cup quarter-final against Swansea on July 21 after beating Colwyn Bay by 14 runs.
Friday night’s tie at Penrhyn Avenue, reduced to a 20-overs-a-side contest due to previous postponements, saw the in-form North Wales League Premier Division outfit progress.
Mochdre won the toss and elected to bat, setting a formidable 163-3.
After being 19-2 early on, the visitors steadied the ship with a stand of 73 for the third wicket between Humphreys and former Bay player Gareth Goodson, who was dismissed for 44.
Humphreys and James French (27 no) then added an unbeaten 71 for the fourth wicket.
Ryan Holtby was Bay’s most impressive bowler, returning 2-14 off four overs.
Colwyn’s reply began well as they reached 54 without loss before Adam Campion was caught by Kyle Brown off Humphreys for 16.
Brown also caught George Johansen for 14 from the economical bowling of Stewart Williams, leaving the hosts 84-2.
All along, home opener Sion Morris was building a captain’s innings, but despite his best efforts in compiling a match-highest score of 84 no, and Will Higginson adding an undefeated 31, Bay’s response ended short on 149-2.
Mochdre now join fellow North Wales League hopefuls Llandudno in the last eight.
