CRICKET: Chirk end dismal run of nine straight losses with winning draw

Division One – August 30

Cound 1st XI (8) 175-10 Chirk 1st XI (14) 104-6

Chirk ended a barren run of nine straight league defeats with a winning draw at third-place Cound last Saturday.

Winning the toss and putting their hosts into bat, the North Wales side bowled out the opposition for 175, Nitish Sharma taking 4-40, Matt Lawrenson 3-39 and Liam Walker 2-60.

In reply, due to the weather Chirk were set a revised target of 118 off 40 overs.

When the rain caused the game to be abandoned, the visitors were on 104-6 from 23.1, skipper Walker best with 31 which included seven fours, Joe Yapp scooping 5-46 for the home side. Chirk got the better of the draw 14-8 on points.

Chirk remain one off the basement in Division One.

Division One – August 23

Frankton 1st XI (24) 229-8 Chirk 1st XI (3) 69-10

A disastrous afternoon for Chirk who crashed by 160 runs against the only side below them in the table.

Frankton won the toss and batted, posting 229-8 off 45 overs, Scott Hale top-scorer with 79, while for the visitors Liam Walker and Mark Shaw both notched 2-52 and Luke Gardner 2-79.

In response, Chirk were blown away for a paltry 69, Thomas Welti 5-1 for the hosts.

Division Seven – August 30

Chirk 2nd XI (0) 69-10 Whittington 1st XI (20) 71-0

A pointless exercise for Chirk seconds as they were skittled out for just 69 and then were unable to take a single wicket in reply, Whittington requiring just nine overs to reach 71-0 and a 20-0 victory.

Chirk seconds lie rock bottom of the Division Seven standings.
