CLUB SPECIAL

Newly-promoted to North East Wales League Division 1, Rhydymwyn FC have announced a number of new arrivals over the past couple of days.

Here’s the rundown, with quotes from new manager ANTHONY WEAVER (pictured above).

Lee Jones

Attacking midfielder previously with Connah’s Quay Town and Mold Alexandra.

Joined CQT in October 2021 and went on to make 62 appearances for the club, scoring 25 times.

Played a major role in Town winning the North East Wales League Championship Division title, Two Counties Cup and Mike Beech Memorial Trophy treble in 2021-22, finishing Premier runners-up and landing the Premier Cup in 2022-23 and then securing promotion to Tier 3 in 2023-24,

Rhydymwyn manager Anthony Weaver says: “Lee is someone I’ve known about for some years, back to his early days in Mold. Delighted to get him signed.”

Liam Rogers

Full-back who has represented Rhydymwyn in the past as well as having spells with Saltney Town, Caerwys, New Brighton Villa and Mynydd Isa.

Played for Rhyd when they were in Ardal North West in 2021-22, then last season made 25 appearances for North East Wales Premier Division side Saltney.

Anthony Weaver: “Roge is someone I have a lot of time for on and off the pitch. On the pitch, he’s a fierce competitor and a quality addition — defensively and offensively.”

Joel Griffiths

Quality midfielder, composed on the ball. Ex-clubs include Connah’s Quay Town and Mold Alex, as well as Rhydymwyn.

Was an important figure in Quay Town’s rise to prominence over the past three seasons, having joined the club in January 2023, making a total of 63 appearances.

Anthony Weaver: “Joel is an outstanding addition, Another lad that’s a must in my team.”

Connor Whelan

A leader on and off the pitch. Centre-back who has been at Prestatyn Town and Conwy Borough in the past, as well as Rhydymwyn.

Vast amount of experience in Tiers 2 and 3 will no doubt be of major benefit to Rhyd this term.

Made 48 Cymru North appearances for Prestatyn over the past three seasons and featured in Ardal North West for both Conwy and Rhydymwyn.

Anthony Weaver: “Wiggo was the first piece of the puzzle. We’ve worked together for years — he’s a leader on and off the pitch, and also a very good friend and footballer.”

Calum Simpson

Forward who has served Connah’s Quay Nomads and Llay Welfare in the past.

Made six Cymru North appearances for Llay last term, but most of his football has been played with a strong Nomads Under-18 side.

Anthony Weaver: “Cal is someone I’ve worked with at Nomads — his attitude and application are first class. I’m looking forward to continuing his development here.”

William Weaver

Young, creative, attacking midfielder who has turned out for Aston Park Rangers, Caerwys and Buckley Town, as well as Rhydymwyn over the past four seasons.

Did well for Aston Park in the North East Wales League Championship Division last season, netting six goals in 21 outings.

Anthony Weaver: “Will is a technical and creative player with the ability to link up in attacking areas.”

Luke Farron

Ex-Hawarden Rangers and Airbus UK Broughton.

Wide player who constantly poses an attacking threat.

Standout performer for Hawarden Rangers Youth over the past three seasons, scoring 27 goals in around 50 games.

Anthony Weaver: “Faz is a strong wide player with an eye for goal — already he’s shown what he can do in recent games.”

Will Leonard

Steel in the midfield, calm in the chaos.

Former Connah’s Quay Town player who has also spent time with Rhydymwyn.

Joined Town at the start of 2021-22 and has been a vital part of their progression from Tier 5 to Tier 3, making 60 appearances and bagging eight goals.

Anthony Weaver: “Naz is a brilliant, fully committed midfield player. His calmness and experience will be key for us.”
