JD Cymru North: Prestatyn gain vital victory to keep escape hopes alive

Prestatyn Town edged a 1-0 victory over Ruthin on Tuesday night

JD CYMRU NORTH – FEBRUARY 11

REPORT – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11

Prestatyn Town 1-0 Ruthin Town

Macauley Taylor’s 69th minute goal was enough to ensure Prestatyn made it seven points out of a possible last 12 in their fight against relegation.

Having lost 7-0 at Ruthin back in August, the Seasiders gained revenge at Bastion Gardens in a similar fashion to their two recent clashes with Caersws where Gareth Thomas’ men were thrashed 8-0 away but edged the return game by a single goal.

Before Tuesday night’s match, Prestatyn were boosted by the signing of Leon Atkins, formerly of Rhyl, Buckley Town and Liverpool side Litherland.

Both teams showed a desire to go forward in the first half, but quality in that vital final third was lacking.

Taylor provided that all-important breakthrough goal just past the midway stage of the second half and that proved enough to bank the points.

Atkins made his debut in the 76th minute, replacing Rob Hughes.

Man of the Match for the home side was the ever hard-working Zebb Edwards.

REPORTS – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Airbus UK 1-1 Colwyn Bay

No separating these outstanding top two sides at the end of 90 minutes

With 15 minutes almost gone, a Sam Hart free kick into the area was flicked on and Bay’s Jamie Cumming looked a cert to score, but his slight touch could only strike the post and the ball rebounded into the grateful arms of Keighan Jones.

Two minutes later, Cumming made no mistake as he took advantage of indecision in the Wingmakers defence to slot past Jones.

Only a fine save from Jones kept out a low Ethan Roberts drive for the visitors.

The scores were level in the first added minute at the end of the opening half.

Kieran Evans delivered a superb deep cross from the left and George Peers scored with a thunderous header.

Bay had the first chance of the second half when Roberts drove in a low effort but Jones collected the ball under pressure from Craig Lindfield.

Both sides had opportunities before Airbus sub James Davies created a great late chance but lashed inches wide.

Bangor 1876 1-1 Penrhyncoch

Penrhyncoch scored a 98th minute penalty to earn a 1-1 draw at Bangor 1876 and deny the hosts their first league victory in seven attempts.

Ryan Stratulis, making his JD Cymru North debut for the hosts, proved his quality by beautifully curling a free-kick into the top corner in the 35th minute.

That looked to be enough for Bangor to claim a first league win since November, until Penrhyncoch won a penalty deep into stoppage time and teenager Owain Evans stepped up from the spot to score his first goal for the club and salvage a point.

Guilsfield 2-2 Prestatyn Town

Prestatyn were denied a first away win of the season as Guilsfield scored a 93rd-minute equaliser to earn a 2-2 split at Clos Mytton.

Iwan Matthews put the Guils ahead in the 14th minute as he squeezed an effort past Robbie Williams at the back post, which remained the difference until just after the hour mark when Prestatyn substitute Macauley Taylor picked out the top corner to equalise after cutting inside onto his right foot.

That goal sparked the Seasiders into life and they took the lead on 77 minutes as James Stead fired home from close range.

But there was to be late heartbreak for Gareth Thomas’ side as Matthews scored again for Guilsfield to equalise in stoppage time, with Prestatyn defender Nathan Lavender sent off after the full-time whistle as commotion ensued.

Llay Welfare 1-2 Buckley Town

Bottom of the table Llay are now 16 points adrift of safety after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Buckley.

Max Moore continued his bright form for the Bucks as he opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

Welfare’s top scorer Jonathan Collo equalised midway through the first half, but Moore set up strike partner Bradley Knight for what proved to be the winner just before the hour mark as he produced a clever flick past Mike Platt.

Consecutive away wins for Asa Hamilton’s side means that they have now bettered their points tally from the whole of last season.

Mold Alexandra 2-2 Caersws

Mold scored a stoppage time equaliser to snatch a share of the spoils at Alyn Park.

Tommy Rowlands opened the scoring for Caersws in eighth minute, before Fabrizio Murtas curled beautifully past Max Williams to level after 11.

January signing Rowlands bagged his second to restore the Bluebirds’ lead four minutes into the second half, which almost secured his side’s first away win since August until Mold defender Lucas Gregson tapped in from close range in the 94th minute.

Caersws goalkeeper Williams was shown a straight red card shortly after Gregson’s leveller, but there was no late winner for either side.

Gresford Athletic 3-0 Holywell Town

Reigning champions Holywell suffered their third straight away defeat in all competitions as they crashed 3-0 at Gresford.

Charley Edge gave the Colliers the lead on 22 minutes as he curled a superb free-kick past Shaun Pearson, before an own goal from Ryan Edwards doubled the advantage after 39.

Holywell pushed for a route back into the contest, but Joe Ormrod raced through one-on-one with Pearson and produced a deft lob over the goalkeeper to make it 3-0 and put the game to bed with 11 minutes remaining.

Ormrod was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time, but Gresford were already safe in the knowledge that they would be moving three points clear of the relegation zone.

Llandudno 2-2 Denbigh Town

Late goals from Mark Cadwallader and Alex Boss saw Llandudno recover from two goals down to seal a 2-2 draw with Denbigh.

Town took control of the contest inside the first 13 minutes as Nathan Brown sent a powerful effort into the bottom corner to open the scoring, before he doubled the lead with a stunning free-kick from the edge of the area.

Llandudno pushed to get back into it throughout the second half, but did not claw a goal back until the 87th minute when Cadwallader bundled the ball home from close range. The equaliser then came in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Boss smashed home a loose ball.

Ruthin Town 1-1 Flint Mountain

The points were shared at Maes Tegid on Friday night.

Jack Parry was in the right place at the right time to tuck away the rebound from Mike Hayes’ shot which hit the crossbar as Mountain went ahead in the 17th minute.

However, substitute Sam Jones equalised for Ruthin five minutes into the second half.
