JD WELSH CUP ROUND TWO – OCTOBER 18-19

Llandudno 4 Kinmel Bay 3

On a weekend where two North Wales Tier 3 sides knocked out Cymru Premier opposition, Kinmel Bay threatened to cause a sensation of their own at Go Goodwins Stadium.

The fourth-tier North Wales Coast East Premier Division underdogs led 3-2 at one stage against Tier 2 favourites Llandudno before the Cymru North outfit had to pull out all the stops to scrape through to round three.

Bay struck first in the sixth minute when Jordan Bellham found the net via a Sean Sheridan assist.

Luca Bennett equalised and Adam Stephens made it 2-1 Tudno from the penalty spot before Sheridan levelled close to the break.

Another goal from the magnificent Sheridan – that’s 10 in seven games since he joined the club in August – put the visitors 3-2 up early in the second half.

Despite there being two levels between the sides, this was an even contest and a shock was on the cards.

However, Michael Davies made it 3-3 after 55 and the winner came via Mark Cadwallader with 77 gone.

Still, there was no let up from Kinmel Bay, who did their league and tier proud.

Great win on the road for Trearddur Bay against fellow Ardal North West opponents Llannefydd.

Bay were forced into an early change when striker Joe Chaplin pulled up with a hamstring strain on 12 minutes. Les Davies entered the field from the bench.

From this moment the away side took control and began to dominate possession. Davies had an effort turned wide by a fantastic save from Dylan Jones.

The hosts came into the game in the second half but it was Bay who opened the scoring on 66 minutes.

Toby Jones picked the ball up near the corner flag and produced some magic before firing into the top corner,

The visitors continued to apply pressure as the game went on, and Harri Jones found himself on the scoresheet from a corner with only six minutes left.

Llannefydd replied in the 92nd minute when Elgan Roberts converted a penalty following a clumsy foul in the area, but it was too little, too late for the hosts.

Bangor 1876 2 Llay Welfare 1

Jonathan Collo gave Llay a fifth-minute lead in this all Cymru North clash, but Sam Jones levelled on 20 and Tom Mahoney’s 54th minute penalty won it for 1876.

Buckley Town 2 Colwyn Bay 2 (Colwyn Bay won 6-5 on penalties)

Bay needed an 89th minute penalty to force a shootout at The Globe which Mike Wilde’s team then won.

Gwion Dafydd handed the Seagulls a first-minute lead, but goals from Callum Humphreys, on 28 and a Max Moore strike after 52 nudged the Bucks ahead.

And the hosts were going through until Bay won a late spot-kick which Jamie Cumming converted to necessitate a penalties contest which Bay edged 6-5.

Despite an encouraging hat-trick fron new signing Dylan Proctor, the Lilywhites crashed to a disappointing loss at higher league Caersws.

Alex Jones added a single for the visitors, but also missed a penalty, while for the Bluebirds, Rhys Hesden and Max Mclaughlin bagged a brace each, Jamie Jones, Craig Harris and sub Callum Francis-Jones also making the scoresheet.

Connah’s Quay Nomads 5 Guilsfield 0

Cup holders Nomads eased through to round three with a five-goal victory over Guilsfield on Saturday.

Eighteen-year-old Tyler Berry scored the only goal of the first half before Ben Maher, Rhys Hughes, Jordan Pownall and Aron Williams all found the net in the final 20 minutes.

Denbigh Town 4 Llangefni Town 2

Harrison Bellis was on the mark twice as tier 2 Denbigh progressed at the expense of third-tier Llangefni.

Jack Smith put Cefni in front after 12 minutes, but Bellis hit back on 37 and 45+3 to nudge the home side in front.

Nathan Brown made it 3-1 early in the second half, Ifan Mansoor replied on 72, but home skipper Paul Fleming sealed it.

Flint Town United 5 Gresford Athletic 1

Cymru Premier Flint trailed 1-0 at the interval to a second-minute Charlie Mann goal before turning the tide after the break.

Joshua Jones (2), Harley Brindley-Peagram, Ben Wynne and Florian Yonsian shared the goals for the Silkmen.

Holywell Town 1 Ruthin Town 1 (Ruthin won 5-4 on penalties)

Quite a surprise at the Bartons North Wales Stadium as Cymru North champions Holywell went out on penalties to fellow tier 2 side Ruthin.

Llyr Morris struck first for the visitors on three minutes before Jake Cooke levelled after 35.

That was the end of the goals, and despite Ruthin playing with 10 men from the 69th minute after two yellows for Matty Williams, the travellers held on for pens and won the shootout 5-4.

Llanrwst United 2 CPD Cerrigydrudion 1

Callum Parry marked the start of his fourth spell as a Llanrwst player by scoring in the 81st and 88th minutes to dramatically turn around Saturday’s tie at Gwydir Park.

Tier 4 Cerrig were threatening to cause an upset after Harri Watkin-Jones gave them a 46th minute lead against the Tier 3 hosts, but Parry stole the liimelight and shattered the underdogs’ dreams late on.

Penrhyncoch 1 Mold Alexandra 3

Daniel Owen’s 13th minute net-finder gave Penrhyncoch a half time advantage, but Mold rallied in the second period to win the tie.

A Charlie Davies double and Taylor Edwards effort won it for Barry Owen’s side.

Porthmadog 0 Airbus UK 2

Tier 3 Ardal North West leaders Port welcomed Tier 2 Cymru North table-toppers Airbus in a keen contest at Y Traeth.

It was 0-0 until the 74th minute when Tyler McManus broke the deadlock and James Davies secured a Wingmakers victory by netting on 90.

Bala Town 3 Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant 1

Not a result to be especially proud of for Cymru Premier Bala against a side from tier 4, but the main objective was to reach the next round, and the Lakesiders did that.

Town needed a Lassana Mendes second-half hat-trick to see off Central Wales League Llanrhaeadr, who replied through sub Gruff Evans.

The New Saints 16 Llangollen Town 0

Whatever this result represented, it was definitely NOT an all-time joint record Welsh Cup win.

It was reported elsewhere that the above was the case, but Mold Alyn Stars 0-21 Shrewsbury Town (1894-95), St Asaph City 18 Rhyl Dragons 0 (2023/24), Aberystwyth Exiles 0 Cardiff Airport 18 (2022-23) and Bodedern 17 Gaerwen 0 (2022/23) all beat it.

Holyhead Hotspur 0 Caernarfon Town 0 (Hotspur won 6-5 on penalties)

Sensational result as Tier 3 eliminates Tier 1.
Report carried by Grassroots North Wales on Friday night.

CPD Llanuwchllyn 0 Newtown 0 (Llanuwchllyn won 5-3 on penalties)

Another Tier 3 victory over Cymru Premier opposition.
Grassroots North Wales covered this game on Saturday.
