Llangefni Town Ladies opened their season under the floodlights at Cae Bob Parry on Wednesday night, suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Clwb Pêl-Droed Merched Bangor City 1876 in the NWCFA Women’s Challenge Cup.

While Bangor arrived with minutes already in their legs following their season opener on Sunday, Cefni showed no signs of early-season sluggishness and started on the front foot.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to break the deadlock. New signing Jessica Woods made an immediate impact, slipping a fine assist through to Jess Jones, who marked her first appearance back for the club with a clinical finish to give Llangefni a deserved lead.

Bangor fought back and pulled level in the 20th minute through Hannah Owen. However, Owen’s evening was cut short shortly after her goal, as an injury forced her off in the 36th minute.

Despite the setback, Llangefni continued to push for a second, creating a barrage of chances. Only an outstanding sweeping performance from Bangor goalkeeper Catrin Roberts kept the away side in the tie, as she repeatedly thwarted Cefni’s attack to ensure the sides went into the break level at 1–1.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Llangefni consistently driving forward. On 66 minutes, fresh legs were introduced as goal-provider Woods made way for Ffion Thomas, but Cefni struggled to turn their continued dominance into a decisive lead.

Instead, the decisive blow came at the other end in the 77th minute. Bangor capitalised on a set-piece, Amy Mano turning home a corner to snatch a 2–1 lead late in the game. Llangefni threw everything forward in the closing stages searching for an equaliser, but the final whistle blew before they were able to find one.

While a tough result to take after an encouraging display, Llangefni won’t have to wait long for a shot at revenge. The two teams will go head-to-head once again on Sunday, September 20th, at Bangor City Stadium in the First Qualifying Round of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup.
