Eight of Saturday’s FAW Amateur Trophy northern qualifying round ties produced upsets which saw lower league sides defeat higher level opponents.

Here’s a rundown of the ‘giant-killings’.

FAW AMATEUR TROPHY QUALIFYING ROUND NORTHERN – THE UPSETS

Bethesda Rovers (Tier 5) 3 Llandudno Junction (Tier 4) 3 (Rovers won 4-3 on pens)

What a fantastic result for North Wales Coast West Division One side Bethesda Rovers against a strong Tier 4 opponent.

Rovers fought back from 2-0 down at the break and then produced a stoppage time equaliser from an amazing free kick to make it 3-3 and force a penalty shoot-out which they won 4-3.

Junction, who finished third in the North Wales Coast East Premier last season, took a fifth-minute lead through Dean Seager and Rob Gore made it 2-0 on 31.

Bethesda fought back well after the interval, Leon Owen making it 2-1 after 47 from a Tom Williams assist.

Louie Turner equalised on 56 and it was truly game on.

Seager edged the Railwaymen back ahead on 67, but in the 94th minute, Adrian Roberts levelled the tie once more with a stupendous free kick.

On to penaltlies, and Junction led 3-2 before Rovers keeper Kieran Murphy produced backto-back saves and Lewis Dixon converted the winning kick for the jubilant hosts.

CPD Boded (Tier 4) 1 Llangefni Town (Tier 3) 0

One of the best results in CPD Boded’s short existence saw them knock Anglesey rivals from a higher tier, Llangefni Town, out of the FAW Trophy.

Cefni are the only Ynys Môn team ever to win the Trophy, when it was known as the Welsh Intermediate Cup back in 1991-92, but their interest in this season’s national competition for third-tier clubs downwards, is over.

After a goalless first half, Boded took a 52nd minute lead via a strike from new signing Justin Williams.

Town had Osian Jones sent off for a second yellow card on 69 and despite their best efforts, Sion Eifion Jones’ side were unable to get past a solid home defence.

CPD Cefni (Tier 5) 3 Glantraeth (Tier 4) 1

Llangefni’s other representatives in the Trophy, CPD Cefni, had a far better day than their higher league counterparts as they shocked fourth-tier neighbours Glantraeth.

Dion Jones handed T5 Cefni a fifth-minute lead, but Iwan Sawicz levelled on 14 and it remained 1-1 up to the changeover.

Midway through the second half, Dylan Griffith restored the Cefni advantage from a Luke Pumfrey assist.

Pumfrey was sent off on 90 minutes for a second yellow, but soon after Dion Jones secured Cefni’s passage to the next stage by making it 3-1.

Cemaes Bay (Tier 4) 5 NFA (Tier 3) 1

After knocking higher league Bow Street out of the Welsh Cup seven days earlier, Cemaes Bay did it again in the Trophy with a stunning defeat of third-tier outfit NFA at School Lane.

The Tier 4 North Wales Coast West League Premier Division hosts from Anglesey once again produced a magical display in front of their own supporters.

Tom Wood was the hat-trick hero on the day with Iolo Hughes and 16-year-old substitute Ryan Allsup also on the scoresheet as NFA were reduced to 10-men after 69 minutes when Owen Herbert received a second yellow before Antonio Jacovelli grabbed a late consolation goal for them.

Wood scored on 29, 45 and 66 minutes to make it four goals in two matches, Hughes struck on 84 and Allsup after 88.

New signing Mike Edwards, a former Cymru North player with Holyhead Hotspur, impressed on his debut, providing an assist.

CPD Cerrigydrudion (Tier 4) 2 CPD Rhos Aelwyd (Tier 3) 1

Despite trailing 1-0 at half time to an eighth-minute Scott Reeves goal, Cerrig recovered after the break to claim a notable win over a higher league side.

Tomos Watkin-Jones, a 25-goal hero last season for Tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier outfit Cerrig, scored twice in the second half after 50 and 72 minutes to sink Adral North East visitors Aelwyd.

Kinmel Bay (Tier 4) 2 Penycae (Tier 3) 1

Kinmel Bay take on Penycae (yellow)

Tate Walker’s 84th minute decider put Tier 4 giant-killers Kinmel Bay into the next round of the Trophy at the exoense of third-tier Penycae.

Cookson Cup holders Bay, already into QR2 of the Welsh Cup, triumphed again at Y Morfa taking a 60th minute lead through Daniel Wickerson before Osian Williams made it one-apiece after 69.

Nyal Hughes set up Walker for the winner six minutes from time.

Overton Recreational (Tier 5) 0 Castell Alun Colts (Tier 4) 0
(Overton won 4-1 on pens)

Joy for North East Wales League Championship side Overton as they held their nerve from the penalty spot better than Premier visitors Casty did.

After a 0-0 draw, Chris Bush, Paul Edwards, Harrison Plumb and Blessing Osilaja all netted from the spot for Rec, while Castell Alun only managed to convert one penalty.

Penyffordd Lions (Tier 4) 0 Acton (Tier 5) 1

Thomas Edwards bagged the goal that mattered as Acton delivered another boost for the NEWL Championship with a win at Premier favourites Penyffordd.
