WELSH CUP NORTH ZONE 2 FINAL

Llandudno (39.4) 157-7
Mochdre (33.4) 154-10

What is it about this Llandudno side and the Welsh Cup!

Three days after knocking St Asaph out of the competition against the odds, The Oval outfit caused an even bigger shock on Sunday by eliminating Mochdre to reach the open draw quarter-finals.

While it may be disrespectful to label Tudno’s last two cup results “giant-killings”, it is certainly true that with them being bottom of the North Wales Premier Division and their beaten opponents occupying the top-two places, the outcomes definitely belong in the “surprise” bracket.

Mochdre won the toss and batted but found themselves in deep trouble on 56-7, overseas player Divya Pratap Singh causing the most damage with the ball.

The visitors steadied the ship with an eighth-wicket stand of 68 between Adam Buckley (47 off the same amount of balls – nine fours) and Finlay Jones (31 not out).

Mochdre were eventually bowled out for 154 in 33.4 overs.

Right-arm swing-pace bowler Singh scooped 5-30 off eight, his best return for the club so far, Jack Rimmington claiming 2-38.

In reply, Llandudno slipped to 63-6, before Jack Rimmington (54) and Matthew Lambe (23 no) turned the match the home side’s way with a seventh-wicket partnership of 77.

Lambe and Tom Thornton (15 no) guided the hosts to victory at 157-7 with two balls to spare.

Earlier, opener Jamie Grimshaw had made a useful 27.

Joe Chaplin bagged a superb 3-17 off eight and Marcus Mangiameli 3-33 for the visitors, who had comfortably beaten Llandudno the day before in a league game.
