Who is Anglesey’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Island Games football competition?
We think we have the answer.
Former Porthmadog and Llangefni Town utility player Richard Hughes (Boskin) scored nine goals for Ynys Môn in the Games’ between 1999-2011.
He is definitely the only player to find the net for Môn in five different Island Games – Gotland 1999, Isle of Man 2001, Guernsey 2003, Rhodos 2007 and Isle of Wight 2011.
The only slight doubt over the No 1 net-finder title surrounds the fact we are missing two scorers from the 121 goals Ynys Môn have chalked up in the tournament (including the one-off Inter-Games of 2019).
The games in question are Ynys Môn 1 Greenland 0 (1989) and Isle of Wight 1 Ynys Môn 1 (1993).
If former Caernarfon Town, Barry Town, Hartlepool and Torquay striker Eifion Williams did not score in either of those games, then Boskin is definitely top marksman.
Williams, who we have down for eight Môn goals, would only have been 13 in 1989 so definitely did not feature then, and was just 17 at the time of the 1993 Games, so it is unlikely he was in that squad either.
So (minus the two aforementioned goals) here is the all-time list of Ynys Môn goalscorers in the Island Games/Inter-Games (1989-2023)
