They signed him mainly as a bowler but it was as a batsman that Usama Mir ensured his debut for Colwyn Bay will never be forgotten!
The Pakistan leg-spinner, who only landed in the UK this morning, took just a single wicket with the ball, but then went to score a match-winning career-best 124 for his new team from North Wales at Penrhyn Avenue.
It was an astonishing effort from Mir, who came in at three and produced his wonder innings off just 63 balls, hitting 10 SIXES and 10 fours.
The 27-year-old starred in a third-wicket stand of 125 with Sion Morris which took the Bay to the brink of a first victory of the season.
Bottom of the ECB Premier League and without a win in four before the start, Colwyn Bay put Wallasey in and restricted them to 192-5 declared off 61 overs, skipper Greg Beaver best with 53 not out.
For the hosts, Jack Parry picked up 3-34 off 17, Adam Campion 1-22 and Mir 1-50 from 24.
Bay’s reply saw new signing, young opener Evan Withe, depart for 20, leaving the hosts 58-2.
Mir then let loose and the rest was history. Can there ever have been such a dramatic debut in the Competition?
Bay finished 193-4 off 32.3 to take the points 20-4.
Punjab right-arm leg-spinner Mia has played in six ODI’s for his country and in domestic cricket represents Central Punjab and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League.
