Hopefully there will be a bar of Milka or two, or even a special Milka cake on the table to treat Llangefni Town’s captain today on her 29th birthday.
Nia Angharad Ginnelly typifies the spirit and determination Llangefni women’s football team show in every game.
Whether they win, draw, lose, or occasionally get defeated heavily, this still developing side always give everything – their skipper would expect no less.
Nia was one of the main driving forces behind the return of women’s football to Llangefni Town in spring/summer 2021.
In their first season in the North Wales Women’s League, they finished 8th out of 10, winning four and drawing two of their 18 games – a really good effort.
They won their very first match – 5-1 at home Welshpool – and later triumphed 5-2 at Holywell, as well as beating Trearddur Bay 4-0 and Llanystumdwy 3-1 at Cae Bob Parry.
Being a holding midfielder, Nia is not a specialist goalscorer, but she has one notable cracker to her name, a beautiful effort in that aforementioned 3-1 win against Llanystumdwy in January 2022.
In his report on the game, manager Dan Gregg wrote: “It took Llangefni until the 39th minute to get the equaliser, captain Nia Ginnelly leading by example as she has done all season, dragging the home team back into the game with a terrific strike from outside the area looping over the Llanystumdwy keeper.”
Jen Cox scored twice in the second half and the points were in the bag.
Mum-of-three Nia lives in Llangefni and is a big Liverpool FC fan.
She goes to watch as many of the men’s and women’s games as possible and loves attending Wales football and rugby matches – a true supporter and a true sports fan.
Her cousin is Steve Kehoe, a very well-known local footballer, mainly for his successes with Llangefni, who he has represented in the Welsh Premier.
Nia’s main asset as a player is her strong tackling, while she constantly works on improving her fitness.
In her younger years, she represented Wales in indoor athletics and wore the vest of Eryri.
Nia was rewarded for a brilliant first season at Llangefni Town by winning Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.
In July, she led Cefni to a memorable success as they won the North Wales Dragons Invitational Tournament.
She is now into her second season for the all-blues and, like all her team-mates and management, will be aiming to improve on their 2021-22 stats.
Oh, she also LOVES Milka products…….
