Skipper leads the way in crushing Chirk win

Luke Gardner claimed 5-21 for Chirk in a thrashing of Newtown

Chirk (20) 62-2 Newtown (0) 58-10

Captain Luke Gardner took an outstanding 5-21 as Chirk sent rivals Newtown home beaten and pointless on Saturday.

Gardner recorded the second best bowling figures of his career, almost a year to the day he scooped 5-20 against Cound.

The skipper’s decision to put Newtown in proved a sound one as the Powys side were skittled out for just 58 in 23.2 overs at Holyhead Road.

Gardner’s 5-21 came off 11 overs, which included six maidens, while Andrew Swarbrick picked up 3-13 and Jonathan Phillips 2-18.

Chirk took just 10.3 overs to make 62-2, Mike Parton hitting seven fours in his 34 not out, Wynn Jones earlier departing for 20.

The whole game lasted less than 34 overs and the hosts took the points 20-0 to remain well-placed in third.

Quatt 3rd XI (20) 90-2 Chirk 2nd XI (1) 87-9

After being put into bat, Chirk’s total of 87-9 off 29.3 overs was never likely to be enough to deliver a victory.

Gary Bailey (26) and David Lunt (20) were the only double-figure merchants for the visitors, Jenny Cotham picking up 4-30 for the home team.

Despite a couple of early wickets for Connor Dyke, who finished with 2-11 off six, Quatt made it to 90-2 in 24.2 overs, skipper Mark Ward making 45 not out.
