A true giant and a true gent of Anglesey football was remembered at a special match last weekend.

Bryngwran Bulls and Trearddur Bay met in a memorial game in honour of the recently passed away Roy Sayle.

The event doubled as a testimonial for Arwyn Williams and Iolo Jones for 10 years’ service to the Bulls.

Former Bryngwran manager Richard Owen said: “Roy will be sadly missed by many, including a lot on the local football radar.

Roy Sayle will be remembered as a true gent

“He was an all-out local football fanatic that ran a junior side for years and a very successful Trearddur Bay Sunday league side that we at Bryngwran had many good battles with in our starting years – and eventually ran the Sunday league as well.”

The Estadio de Cau Ysgol at Bryngwran was the venue for a game played in wet conditions but nothing could dampen the great spirit on show.

Players past and present took part, including Roy’s son, goalkeeper Roy Jr.

The game finished 1-1. Bulls scored on 35 minutes through Matt Reynolds, Bay equalising on 87 via Luke Roberts. Bulls ended up 5-4 winners on penalties, but the outcome was irrelevant.

Richard added: “It was a typical wet Sunday league weather day – you wouldn’t want it any other way – with everyone showing respect before kick off with a minute’s applause for Roy.

“The game itself was decent and reffed by Carl Hagan with a lot of players having not kicked a ball in years.

“To be honest a few that played still hadn’t kicked it after the game finished either, but credit due to everyone that turned up; a fantastic day all round finished off with both teams celebrating with a few pints after the match.

“The game went to pens with football really being the winner

“Over £450 was raised on the day through kind donations. A huge thank you to everyone involved. The money will be donated to Cancer Research.”
