Mark Thomas steps down as manager of tier 5 football club Llangoed

Mark Thomas has stepped down from his role as manager of Ynys Môn club Llangoed FC.

The man affectionately known as “Cabbage” announced his decision on social media.

Thomas, 42, took over at Tyddyn Paun in 2019-20 and in a curtailed first season due to Covid had shown signs of developing a promising young team in the former Gwynedd League.

Llangoed have been placed in the tier 5 North Wales Coast West Division One in a 2020-21 campaign which is yet to begin because of the pandemic.

“It’s with great disappointment that myself and Tyddyn Paun have parted company,” Thomas wrote on social media.

“Over much discussions over the weekend it’s clear that both parties were heading in different directions.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to (club officials) Dewi Williams, Owen Williams, Rhiannon Williams and Richard Gregson for making me feel so welcome from day one.

“Last but not least a big thank you to the players who from day one has given their all for me. Good luck in the future to everyone.”

Club stalwart Dewi Williams said in response: “Thank you for everything you did for the club on and off the field mate. They might have been on a different page to you, but I think the lads and myself have also learnt a lot from the time you were with us.”

Thomas had an illustrious playing career which included stints in the League of Wales with Bangor City, Caernarfon Town and Porthmadog.

Perhaps his finest moments came at Glantraeth, where he won the Cymru Alliance league and cup double in 2005/06.

At the club presentation night, he was acclaimed for being top scorer from midfield, and also scooped players’ player, managers’ player and committee’s player of the season.

Thomas was also part of the Glantraeth side which famously beat Bangor City in a Welsh Cup tie at Farrar Road on October 4, 2003.

The Anglesey team fielded local Bangor-born players throughout, winning on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

After a spell at Bangor City in the mid-1990’s, Mark joined Mid-Wales club Rhayader Town.

Following one season at Y Weirglodd, he joined Cemaes Bay under Paul Whelan, then followed him to Glantraeth.

He represented Caernarfon Town and Porthmadog in the top flight before due to family and work commitments he went to Bethesda and finished at Llangoed. In 2018, he also helped coach at CPD Cefni FC.
