Danny Brookwell brought a touch of real class to the Cymru Premier with Caernarfon Town

One of the most exciting players to grace the Cymru Premier League over the past three seasons has parted company with Caernarfon Town.

Danny Brookwell leaves The Oval after a five-year stint with the Canaries where he became a huge crowd favourite.

The 27-year-old was brought to the club by Iwan Williams in 2015 and made an immediate impact, helping the Cofis scoop the Cymru Alliance league and cup double.

Brookwell was a key figure again when Town repeated the tier 2 feat in 2017-18, this time leading to their promotion to the Cymru Premier after a 10-year absence.

The top flight looked tailor-made for the flying left-winger from the moment he made his debut as a second-half sub in Caernarfon’s opening day 1-0 victory over Cefn Druids in August 2018.

His first CPL goal came in a 3-0 win over Llanelli the following month, and seven days later he netted again in a 1-1 draw at Cefn Druids.

Probably Danny’s finest hour that season came at Bala, when he scored twice in a 2-2 outcome.

He put Caernarfon ahead with a lovely shimmy and angled finish in the first half, but his second goal soon after the break was something else.

Taking possession midway inside his own half, Danny ran and ran and ran some more with the ball at his feet before applying the deftest of left-foot finishes from an acute angle.

In 27 appearances in 2018-19 he scored six league goals, the best a magnificent volley to put the Canaries 2-1 up in another contest at Bala. The 3-1 victory helped Caernarfon secure a top six finish on their return to the national league.

Although hampered by injury in a shortened 2019-20 campaign, Danny still featured in 23 CPL matches and played a part in Town sealing back-to-back top half placings.

This season his first-team opportunities have been less frequent under new manager Huw Griffiths, who has undergone a considerable squad rebuild.

Commenting on his departure on social media yesterday, Danny said: “Unfortunately, my time at Caernarfon Town has come to an end.

“Gutted, but I feel it’s the right time. I have had a great five years at the club and had some amazing memories.

“Massive thanks to the Cofi Army for the support over the years.”

A native of Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, Danny lives in Benllech and has represented Ynys Môn at the international Island Games.

He also played for the Royal Navy at under 19 and under 23 level.

Danny has twice represented the service at the Dallas Cup in Texas and in 2012 was nominated for the Royal Navy’s Young Sports Person of the Year award.

The thrilling talent played for island teams Llanfairpwll, Glantraeth and Menai Bridge Tigers before joining Caernarfon in 2015/16.

Five years at The Oval have come to an end, and Caernarfon spoke warmly of their now former player: “Danny has been an integral part of the club’s rise to the Cymru Premier League and then helping us become a force in the top tier,” said a club statement.

“Blessed with searing pace and an eye for goal, he has become a huge favourite of the supporters and will always be regarded as a legend of the club.

“A genuinely nice man, we’ll all miss Brooky, and wish him the very best of luck in the future.”
