Liam Morris has always impressed in club football but it was at an international tournament last year where he really hit the headlines.
The Llanfairpwll-based striker, who is 22 today, was part of the Ynys Môn men’s side which won gold at the 2019 Inter-Island Games competition staged on Anglesey.
Liam’s party piece was a magnificent volleyed goal which brought Ynys Môn level against Guernsey in the final at Holyhead Hotspur stadium. Mel McGinness went on to fire a late winner in an unforgettable 2-1 triumph.
That acrobatic finish from Liam will never be forgotten by anyone among the 3,000 crowd present that day.
The goal had more than a touch of the Paolo di Canio about it – remember that stupendous volley the Italian put away for West Ham against Wimbledon in March 2000?
Former Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge, pupil Liam was outstanding throughout last year’s tournament. He also scored in Ynys Môn’s opening group game 2-1 victory over Western Isles and his goal sealed a 1-0 verdict against Jersey.
He was joint top-scorer on three for the team with McGinness and Sam Jones, the trio finishing co-third in the overall competition goal chart.
This summer has seen Liam join Cymru North club Holyhead Hotspur from Conwy Borough.
The striker started his career at Gaerwen but came to prominence at Llangefni Town where he helped Chris Roberts’ side win the Welsh Alliance Division One title in 2018-19 with a 22-goal haul.
His performances helped him seal a move to Cymru North club Conwy Borough in summer 2019.
Now he joins the club whose home ground will always evoke memories of that wonder goal versus Guernsey.
Hotspur manager Darren Garmey said of his new capture: “Liam is a player we have liked for a few seasons now. Technically he is as good as anyone around, and he will give us balance on the left side and a greater threat in the final third.”
Happy birthday Liam – have a great day.
