WRU Shield quarter-final
All hail the heroes of Holyhead Rugby Club!
The Holy Islanders proved themselves to be the pride of North Wales once more as they reached the inaugural national Shield semi-finals with an epic win at Cardiff Saracens.
Having already seen off Brackla (15-5) and Llanrumney (38-5) from the south in this season’s competition, Caergybi faced their toughest test yet at Roath Park Recreational Ground this afternoon.
The WRU League 3 East Central C Sarries, who lie second in their table with a 100% record of 10 straight wins, started favourites to see off their visitors from Division 3 North.
But Holyhead are flying this season and produced surely the biggest result in the club’s varied history.
Accompanied by a huge travelling support from Holy Island, Caergybi celebrated a well-deserved but hard-fought victory against a side hotly tipped to go all the way in the Shield.
As expected, the Cardiffians put up a big battle, but Holyhead held the edge.
Try-scorers for the visitors were Ben Jordan, Mei Parry and Aron Parry.
Rhodri Parry landed a conversion and penalty, while Owain Thomas also added three points with the boot.
It promises to be a lively and jovial trip home for the islanders tonight!
