Friday night match report: Lex XI v Acton (Tier 4)

NORTH EAST WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 1 – FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2026

Lex XI 0

Acton 1 (Toby Wynne 2)

REPORT: SHAUN BEST

Acton kicked off the NEWFA domestic season with a 1-0 victory against Lex XI at Stansty Park.

The Tier 4 curtain raiser pitted last season’s relegated hosts against the NEWFA Division Two champions.

Acton took just two minutes to hit the front. Toby Wynne met Liam Davies’ free kick with a perfectly timed header which beat Joey Jones at his near post.

Davies tried a direct approach from his next set piece, but Jones was equal to the effort and tipped over. The energetic Davies then ran onto a long clearance to leave Acton with a two on one advantage. However, Davies’ attempted final ball to teammate Sam Giles went awry and Lex were able to clear their lines.

Acton remained a threat going forward. Alix Godfrey’s curled effort caught a deflection, but Jones still managed to palm it away from danger.

Lex defender Seb Kidd used his tall frame to meet a set piece in the box, only to see Luke Hughes keep out his bullet header.

Wynne wasted a golden chance to double his side’s advantage on the stroke of half time when Jones ran out to block his shot.

However, the referee adjudged Jones to have fouled the Acton defender while making the save and pointed to the spot. Liam Davies stepped up and sent his resulting penalty over the bar.

Early after the restart, a Davies corner led to a scramble in the Lex penalty area and the ball rebounded off the crossbar before the home defence were able to clear. Lex stayed in the game and James Johnson almost took advantage when he lashed a dangerous volley inches wide.

Acton pushed for a second goal. Giles sent a free header wide from a Jack White cross, then White was unfortunate to see the ball roll under his feet as he attempted a shot at goal.

Lex substitute Robert Parcesepe timed his run to perfection to latch onto a through ball, but opted to shoot high instead of low and the ball ended up in the trees.

Although the hosts continued to push, they couldn’t get any change out of a resolute Acton defence, who saw out an opening day victory.
