MATCH OF THE DAY: Second half goal blitz sees Pwllheli to victory at leaders Denbigh

NORTH WALES COAST WOMEN’S LEAGUE REPORT NOVEMBER 1

Pwllheli 5 (M Hughes 2, Moore 2, Thomas)

Pwllheli made it seven straight wins in all competitions this season with an emphatic victory at previously unbeaten leaders Denbigh.

The first half saw neither side really get going.

Pwllheli had the majority of possession but could not score, while Town produced a few breaks which asked questions of the away defence.

As the second half arrived, as did the confidence which has typified Pwll’s start to the campaign.

Erica Jones’ side passed well and found space, which led to a five-goal salvo.

The deadlock was broken in the 57th minute, Denbigh keeper Chiara Donnelly and a defender appeared to collide, and captain Magi Hughes took advantage by netting a screamer from outside the box.

In the 61st minute the away lead was doubled, Smart passing and build-up play from the back led to the ball finding Sian Moore on the 18-yard line. Moore took a touch and her strike dipped into the net over the keeper.

Skipper Hughes certainly had her shooting boots on. In the 67th minute, the midfield ace made it seven goals in five games with another missile.

Denbigh kept trying and gained a consolation goal on 71 minutes through sub Paige Perkins.

Pwllheli went 4-1 up in the 79th minute when more slick combination play saw a through ball to Lois Thomas, who dribbled into the box and notched her 16th goal of the season.

Thomas turned provider when her neat pass released Moore to make it 5-1 with her 18th goal of the campaign.

Denbigh never stopped battling with their keeper Donnelly producing some tremendous saves.

Although they suffered their first defeat, Town can be proud of the start made to the season and can take consolation that it took an exceptional side like Pwllheli to end their undefeated run.
