Archive Classics: Prestatyn Town in seven heaven after record Welsh Premier win

Andy Parkinson (second from left) scored on an afternoon to remember for Prestatyn Town 13 years ago

Having covered North Wales football for close on 40 years. I’ve attended and reported on hundreds if not thousands of games across the pyramid.
Here’s another in a series of classics from the archives

2012-13 WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE

PRESTATYN TOWN 7 (Parkinson 4, Parker 18 & 69 pens, Price 30, 55, Gibson 60, 66)
CARMARTHEN TOWN 1 (Hicks 50)

APRIL 16, 2013

What a day for Prestatyn Town at Bastion Gardens as they rattled up a record 7-1 Welsh Premier victory over an outgunned Carmarthen Town.
Twelve months to the day since they had recorded their biggest ever WPL win of 6-1, Prestatyn went one better – and against the same opponents they hit for six a year previously.
Prestatyn player-manager Neil Gibson, who scored twice himself, could hardly have been more delighted.
“It wasn’t the scoreline so much, but the manner of the performance,” he said. “We played some fantastic football. We certainly didn’t expect to win 7-1, but we were full value for it. We’d have been more than a match for anyone in this league today.”
Striker Andy Parkinson, back from injury, did not take long to make an impact when he made it 1-0 after four minutes following good link-up play between Michael Parker and Gibson. The flicked pass Gibson produced to release Parkinson was downright sublime.
Parker added a second from the penalty spot on 18 after Parkinson had been fouled by Corei Thomas..
Jason Price added number three, a powerful header from a Ross Stephens cross via the left..
Jon Hill-Dunt produced a magnificent stop to deny the Old Gold a reply before the break.
Carmarthen opened their account through Tim Hicks early in the second period, a downward heaer from a Jack Christopher high cross, but Prestatyn regained control on the hour when Gibson played a slick one-two and waltzed past defenders before rounding keeper Rhys Wilson and firing in from an angle.
Carmarthen were reduced to 10 men when Thomas was shown a second yellow for a clumsy foul on Price near the centre circle.
Price made it four goals in three starts when he received the ball from Parkinson and walloped in a beauty from 20 yards.
Goal number six came from a superb four-man move – Price out to Parkinson, inside to Chris Davies and a sidefoot assist for Gibson to make it 6-1 on 66 minutes.
The hosts completed the rout on 69 minutes when Parkinson was felled in the box again by keeper Wilson, who was sent off, and Parker put away his 24th top flight goal in a Seasiders shirt.
