JD WELSH CUP REPORT 1: Bangor City 1876 stun the Wellmen!

JD WELSH CUP ROUND THREE – NOVEMBER 22, 2025
Bangor 1876 2 (McGonigle 63, Carey 71)
Holywell Town 1 (Murtas 5)
Tier 3 underdogs Bangor City 1876 fought back from a goal down to knock Cymru North high-flyers Holywell out of the Welsh Cup.
An incident-packed third round tie watched by 857 at Bangor City Stadium saw the Ardal North West hosts stretch their season-long unbeaten record to 20 matches.
And this win had to rank as one of the best in the club’s six-year history.

Holywell made the stronger start and took the lead after just five minutes.
Jack Sconce delivered a cross into the box and Fabrizio Murtas lashed into the roof of the net.
Soon after Corrig McGonigle got in behind the away defence, but his strike from an angle was tipped away by Tyler French.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men on eight minutes when Guto Williams saw red for a last-defender foul on Josh Carey.
Nonetheless, the Wellmen should have gone two-up in the 10th minute when Cai Roberts brought down Jamie Breese in the area and referee James Walker pointed to the spot.
The usually deadly Breese stepped up, but 1876 keeper Carl Jones, surely the king of North Wales penalty savers, worked his magic again to deny Town’s 16-goal top-scorer.

A 2-0 lead at that stage would have left the Citizens with a major hurdle to climb, but the hosts had been thrown a lifeline and almost made the most of it when Dylan Summers-Jones had a great opportunity, but French was able to deny him.
Breese went close with two further shots and Jack Smith was not far away for the home team as action switched from end-to-end.
Tom Clarke found the net for Bangor, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Half-time arrived with a slender lead for 10-man Holywell.

The Citizens began the second half on the front foot and eventually the pressure told when they levelled on 63 minutes.
Jamie Reed fed the ball across the goalmouth and McGonigle pounced for his 17th goal in all competitions this term.
And nine minutes later the home fans went wild as Carey smashed home a beauty to put 1876 2-1 up.
Holywell pushed for a late equaliser, but that man Jones once again produced an heroic moment with a superb save.
A day to remember for the Bangor City Stadium faithful.
