St Asaph City seek a new manager following Matty Roberts’ departure

St Asaph City are on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of Matty Roberts.

Saints had won their opening two games of 2025-26 in the Welsh Cup and FAW Amateur Trophy, against Castell Alun Colts and Kerry respectively, but lost their first match of the Ardal North West campaign last weekend, going down 3-0 at newly-promoted Mynydd Isa.

The club announced on Friday that Roberts had stepped down.

Roberts’ first senior management role was with Llanelwy Athletic, winning the 2018-19 Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One title and REM Jones Cup double.

He jointly led the Rhyl FC Academy before becoming part of Gareth Thomas’ coaching staff in 2020 at the newly-formed CPD Y Rhyl 1879.

Roberts became Rhuddlan Town player-coach in 2021-22, a post he held while also coaching at Colwyn Bay Academy.

In June 2022, Roberts was appointed manager of St Asaph City, where he had great success in the ensuing season, landing a Tier 4 treble of North Wales Coast East Premier Division title, NWCFA Intermediate Cup and Cookson Cup.

In all, the team won 80% of 63 matches in his first 18-month spell in charge at Roe Plas Meadows.

Roberts took over at Prestatyn Town in January 2024. Although he only won three of his 15 matches at the helm, under his leadership the Seasiders survived in the Cymru North thanks to a final night 2-2 draw at Gresford Athletic.

Nonetheless, the manager left the club in August 2024 and returned to St Asaph for a second stint the following month.

Under Roberts the Saints finished 12th in Tier 3 Ardal North West last term.

Last weekend’s loss at Mynydd Isa meant he had won 9, drawn 7 and lost 11 matches in his second stay as Asaph boss.

In a short social media statement on Friday, St Asaph City said: “The club would like to announce that First Team Manager Matty Roberts has stepped down from his role.

“The club wishes to thank Matty for all he has done over the years and wishes him all the best for the future.”
