Two wins out of three, 6-1 and 4-1 victories, yet a fifth-place finish – Ynys Môn women did not quite get what they deserved at the 2025 Orkney Island Games. They were worthy of a bronze at least.
One half of play cost them a medal, and it was 45 minutes of wind-assisted football which ensured Western Isles scored all four of their goals in a 4-2 win against Môn in their opening game.
Dan Gregg picked an outstanding squad for Orkney – his second Island Games as manager. An ideal balance of youth and experience.
There is no doubt this young Ynys Môn squad is progressing superbly well.
Here’s a look at how the players performed:
Seventeen-year-old goalkeeper certainly impressed in her first Island Games.
Her toughest opponent was the overwhelming wind in the loss to Western Isles, but she stood up to be counted and performed really well overall.
Played in all three matches in Orkney and no wonder as her relentless effort and work-rate from right-back and wing was outstanding.
In her fifth Island Games and inspirational as ever. Was debited with an own goal against Western Isles, but could not be blamed at all as it was an impossible cross to deal with.
Not only her Island Games debut but marked the occasion with a goal. This tall defender showed tremendous promise.
Wholehearted and committed as always in her appearances as a substitute.
After a great season at the back for Llangefni, Beth hit the ground running at the Games and was rock-solid in all three matches she started.
Started in the 6-1 win against Hitra and made a great contribution to the team’s thumping victory.
Two starts and a sub appearance in Orkney. Busy performance as always in the attacking midfield role where she excels for Bangor.
Experienced head started all three games and provided that assured presence in the midfield alongside younger team-mates.
Great experience for this youngster, providing plenty of impact in her substitute appearances.
What a bonus it was to have this young star on duty for Ynys Môn. Top-scorer with four goals, including a hat-trick in the thrashing of Jersey.
Capped 38 times by Wales from under-15 to U19 level and surely the future holds even bigger things for the Amlwch ace.
Talk about ‘super-sub’! Scored a wonder goal after coming on in the second half in the 6-1 demolition of Hitra. Also interviewed by ITV!
Following a superb season for Llangefni, Catrin came to Orkney on a high and played that way, producing some magnificent defensive play in her three games.
Three goals for this young striker who only enhanced her growing reputation at the Games.
One to watch in the season ahead for Bangor.
Just gets better and better. A constant attacking threat in every game for Ynys Môn. scoring against Hitra, winning penalties, offering assists. Would not be surprising at all to see her named as one of the players of the tournament.
Another who was magnificent for Môn. Scored beautiful goals against Western Isles and Hitra, always dazzling in attack and a non-stop work ethic which made her again one of the players of the tournament. A credit to Felinheli.
Looked lively and capable in her substitute appearances. Good experience for this late replacement.
Jul 17: Jersey 4-1 (Casi Evans 3, Menna Evans)
Jul 15: Hitra 6-1 (Menna Evans 2, Hannah Owen, Casi Evans pen, Ceri Slaney, Ellie Jones)
Jul 14: Western Isles 2-4 (Ellie Jones, Erin Burns)
