Tributes paid to popular cricketer who left us far too soon

Tributes have been paid to a popular North Wales cricketer who passed away recently.

Stephen Conner was a former second team captain and junior cricket co-ordinator of Chirk CC, spending three seasons with the Shropshire County League club having previously played for a number of years at Gwersyllt Park.

Steve notched more than 3,000 runs and took 87 wickets over a career which stretched back 20 years.

In 2022, he made a club best score of 96 not out for Chirk’s 2nd XI in a Shropshire League Division Six game at Column 2nd XI.

All-rounder Steve’s career best with the bat was 107 for Gwersyllt Park 1st XI versus Marchwiel and Wrexham 2nd XI back in 2009.

His best bowling was 5-35 for Chirk 2nd XI v Cae Glas 2nd XI in 2021.

Chirk CC paid the following tribute: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Conner.

“Steve was a much-loved member of Chirk Cricket Club and someone who gave so much of his time and energy to the development of the club at every level.

“As our Lead Junior Coordinator, Steve had a huge impact on countless young players over the years. His dedication, encouragement and passion for helping others meant he played a vital role in shaping the future of the club through the junior section — something we will always be grateful for.

“Steve was also a key figure within the second team and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the smooth running of the club.

“Whether it was organising, coaching, a wise word, lending a hand or simply being there when needed, Steve’s commitment never went unnoticed.

“His absence leaves a hole not only in Chirk Cricket Club but in the wider cricketing community, where he was equally admired and appreciated.

“We will miss Steve dearly — as a coach, as a teammate, and as a friend. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.

“Rest in peace, Steve. Thank you for everything. You will always be part of the Chirk CC family.”
