SHAMBLES: This Sunday’s women’s football promotion play-off is cancelled – so what happens next?

Sunday’s North East Wales Women’s League Promotion Play-Off between Llangefni Town and Berriew has been postponed, reports suggest.
The Tier 3 match between East Division champions Berriew and West Division runners-up Llangefni, due to be held at Brymbo, is supposed to offer the prize of a place in Tier 2 Genero Adran North for the winners.
However, it is believed Berriew has told the North East Wales FA they cannot/will not play the game as they cannot raise a team. A notice has been published on Llangefni Town’s social media stating this.
What a shambles!
Every single season there is a different issue in tier 3 North Wales women’s football that causes chaos.
How can a club not be able to raise a team for such an important fixture? They had 16 players available for last Sunday’s ‘Champions of Champions’ game against Pwllheli.
Although, in defence of both sides, the choice of venue (near Wrexham) for a final between one team from Powys and another from Anglesey does seem ridiculous.
It was exactly the same situation last season when Brymbo was selected to host the Betty Pickering Cup Final between Llangefni and Pwllheli.
The Llyn Peninsula has been particularly harshly treated when it comes to staging finals this season.
A fortnight ago, the neighbouring towns of Nefyn and Pwllheli were asked to play the NWCFA Development Cup men’s final in…..Penmaenmawr.
Why couldn’t somewhere nearer for both be found?
And last weekend, as mentioned above, Berriew and Pwllheli had to travel to Buckley Town to play the North East Wales League East-West Divisions Play-Off to determine the overall champions.
Next season, we are told, the North Wales Coast FA will be running its own women’s league, while the North East Wales FA go in a different direction.
Best of luck all round, but after the farcical last few seasons women’s football in North Wales has endured, can we feel anything else but pessimistic?
As for tomorrow’s promotion play-off, we can unofficially confirm that the match is cancelled. We have asked the NEWFA for a statement which we are awaiting.
Llangefni Town and Berriew have also been approached, but as yet no replies.
If anything changes, we’ll let you know, but when you are dealing with clubs and organisations who will not respond to you, it makes things difficult.
May 25 is the last available date for the promotion play-off so I’m told.
If Berriew do not fulfill the fixture, then surely Llangefni Town should be awarded automatic promotion.
