Menai Tractors Cup Final: Caergybi end a fine season with well-deserved silverware

Caergybi wrapped up what is probably their best season to date with a two-goal victory in tonight’s Menai Tractors Cup final at Parc Meurig, Bethesda.

It was the fourth cup success in the club’s eight-year history dating back to 2017-18 when they began life in the former Anglesey League.

This season also saw the Millbank outfit finish runners-up in North Wales Coast West Division One and reach the final of the NWCFA Junior Challenge Cup.

All that was missing was a trophy as reward for their endeavours and that was delivered tonight.

In what was a scrappy game overall, Caergybi took a 19th minute lead when Jerome Sillence found the net for his 13th goal of the campaign, Sion Jones with the assist.

The Holyhead-based side had Ash Beck red-carded on 22 minutes.

After the Junior Cup final loss to Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs, Caergybi prolific striker James Ryan spoke of his determination to bounce back with some silverware before the end of the season – and he proved good to his word.

Ryan, who had come on as a first half substitute, notched his 12th goal of the season on 38 minutes, Sillence with the assist on this occasion.

It was a 205th career goal for Ryan, who scored a club record 72 times in 2018-19 when he lifted the Bob Brodie Trophy awarded to the island’s leading marksman each season.

No further goals were scored in the second half, but Caergybi had Sillence dismissed for a second yellow on 86 minutes.

Nonetheless, it did not take the gloss off a fine end to the season for Dale Moffat and James Jones’ team.
