History repeats itself in more ways than one for Penmaenmawr in NWCFA Intermediate final

Meet the 2024-25 NWCFA Intermediate Cup winners

NWCFA INTERMEDIATE CUP FINAL 2024-25

Penmaenmawr Phoenix 2 (L Williams 81, Crossfield 90+5)
Llanfairfechan Town 1 (E Jones 44)

Exactly 100 years on from the first time they won the NWCFA Intermediate Cup, Penmaenmawr Phoenix have done it again.

And just like back in 1925, when Phoenix beat Denbigh 2-1, the same scoreline decided yesterday’s final at Y Morfa, Conwy.

Aaron Keating’s side completed the second leg of a targeted treble when they came from behind to beat local rivals Llanfairfechan Town with two late goals.

That made it 28 matches in all competitions undefeated for the Cae Sling outfit.

A packed crowd at Y Morfa Stadium was treated to a thrilling cup final under the blistering sun. Having already played each other twice this season, with Penmaenmawr claiming victories of 7-0 and 3-1, the stakes were high.

From the outset, Llanfairfechan implemented a solid game plan, focusing on defense to disrupt the Phoenix’s rhythm.

They nearly took the lead in the 30th minute when Harry Croston hit the post with a header from a corner.

The breakthrough came in the 44th minute after Ellis Jones was played through by team-mate Elliot Croston. Jones made no mistake, slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

HALF-TIME: Llanfairfechan 1 Penmaenmawr 0

The second half saw Llanfairfechan continuing to frustrate Penmaenmawr, but the Phoenix began to find their attacking stride, with Daniel Williams and Adam Hold becoming increasingly influential.

Mike Williams almost levelled in the 60th minute but was denied by the post. As the match neared its conclusion, it became evident that a special goal would be needed to break through Llanfairfechan’s defence.

That moment arrived in the 81st minute when defender Logan Williams scored a stunning free kick from near the halfway line, sending the ball soaring into the top corner.

With the match seemingly headed for extra time, Harley Crossfield had other ideas. In the 95th minute, Crossfield picked up the ball just inside Llanfairfechan’s half, gliding past three defenders before unleashing a low, driven shot from 20 yards that found the bottom corner.

The Phoenix supporters erupted in celebration, and shortly after the restart, referee Tomos Jones blew the final whistle, marking a second trophy for Penmaenmawr this season.

Penmaenmawr’s manager Keating praised Llanfairfechan’s efforts, acknowledging their tactical approach.

He highlighted the resilience of his own players, particularly noting Crossfield’s outstanding performance and remarkable goal.

He extended best wishes to Llanfairfechan for next season and now prepares his team for another quick turn around to face Kinmel Bay on Wednesday evening in a potential title decider.
