PREVIEW: NWCFA Intermediate Cup final – Can mighty Phoenix win a trophy they last lifted exactly 100 years ago?

NWCFA Intermediate Challenge Cup Final 2024-25
Llanfairfechan Town v Penmaenmawr Phoenix

Saturday, May 17 – 5.30 pm at Y Morfa, Conwy

Exactly 100 years since they won the NWCFA Intermediate Challenge Cup for the one and only time in their history, Penmaemawr Phoenix have a chance of a unique centenary celebration when they compete in the 2025 final this weekend.

Standing in their way on Saturday are fierce local rivals Llanfairfechan Town. What an occasion in prospect!

The latest football clash of two towns in very close proximity, which has become known as the Quarries Derby or the Tunnels Derby, this time has the top tier 4 prize Intermediate Cup on the line.

Some venues for finals in North Wales this season have made no sense, but in Y Morfa, Conwy, this is the ideal place for these two North Wales Coast East Premier Division foes to meet.

Pen have already scooped the Cookson Cup and are favourites to lift the Premier title. If they land the Intermediate Cup for a second time, it will keep them on course for a treble.

Llanfairfechan have had a mixed campaign but will finish a respectable ninth in the Premier.

Recent battles between the pair have gone very much in favour of Phoenix, who have won the last six derbies dating back to 2021-22.

Phoenix are undefeated in their last 27 matches in all competitions, winning 24. They have not lost since going down 5-0 at tier 3 Trearddur Bay in the FAW Amateur Trophy last October.

In terms of the Intermediate Cup, Penmaenmawr were winners in 1925, while Llanfairfechan scooped the trophy in 1928. Back in the 1920s, the competition was known as the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.

Llanfair have reached four finals in total and Pen three, but neither have got there since 1940.
