North East Wales League: Premier leaders Isa edge out Lex in classic, Douglas hits 20-goal mark

NORTH EAST WALES LEAGUE REPORTS – FEBRUARY 15
Premier Division

Mynydd Isa 4 Lex XI 3
Leaders Mynydd Isa made it five league win in six starts in 2025 and moved eight points clear at the summit after edging a seven-goal thriller against Lex.
Mynydd stormed to a 3-0 half time lead, the Law fought back to 3-3, but hat-trick hero Sam Wainwright clinched the points for the hosts.
Isa were by far the more clinical in the first 45, Wainwright breaking the deadlock on six minutes from a Steve Chiocchi assist, before Nathan Mendoza made it two after 37, Wainwright setting him up.
Just before the break, Wainwright converted a penalty and it looked like game over.
However, a half time discussion and some rallying from captain James Rogers meant Lex came out of the blocks and took the gloves off with a fantastic second stanza display with three goals from Adam Liddy, Josh Phillips direct from a corner and an excellent header from Harry Massey bringing it back to 3-3 – this shell-shocked the league leaders.
Lex pushed for the winner, but Mynydd Isa counter-attacked and got a last-minute decider through Wainwright, who had a perfect afternoon with his treble.
Castell Alun Colts 4 Hawarden Rangers 2
Luca Nardo (2), Harri Ap Dylan Williams and Niall Evans shared the decisive goals for winners Casty, captain Ellis Jones and Lewis Cunliffe responding.
FC Queen’s Park 1 Saltney Town 0

A hard-fought victory for FC Queen’s Park, securing all three points with a solid defensive display and a well-worked goal.
The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Jake Jones played a dangerous pass to the edge of the box, linking up with Jake Harper. His shot deflected into the path of Nicky Williams, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
Park Man of the Match – Jake Jones
An outstanding performance at the back, reading the game brilliantly and making key tackles to stop Saltney Town’s counter-attacks. A rock in defence and a key part of the win.
Match Highlights:
Strong defensive unit – Led by Jake Jones, Queen’s Park absorbed pressure and stayed organised.
Tony Jones heroics – A crucial first-half foot-first save to deny a certain goal.
Midfield control – Sam Molyneux & Corey Smart drove the team forward, creating attacking opportunities.
High work rate – Dion Thomas & Jake Harper provided relentless energy throughout.
CPD Gronant 1 Rhostyllen 5
Tom Douglas reached 20 goals for the season with a double in a convincing victory for Rhostyllen at Gronant.
Douglas also hit four against the same opponents a fortnight earlier, so is probably already an early candidate to be crossed off their Christmas card list.
Jordan Ellis, Lewis Bickerton-Cole and Sam Chesters were also on the mark for the visitors, Dylan Taylor the sole Gronant marksman.

Championship Division

Broughton United 7 Johnstown YFC 0

A comprehensive win for the leaders.
After going in at half time 4-0 up thanks to an Ethan Evans brace and goals from Elliot Evans and Lewis Hopwood, the hosts did not let up and pushed on to score a further 3.
Ethan Evans completed a hat-trick and second half substitute Jayden Evans added a brace.
Jayden Evans’ pair was an important one as it keeps him at the summit of the top scorers chart – 27 goals in 17 league games at only 18 years old.
Elliot Evans, Lewis Hopwood and Lewis Jones both supplied two assists each, whilst hat-trick hero Ethan Evans provided one.
Acton 3 Overton Recreational 4
After building a three-goal lead Overton were glad to finish up narrow victors.
Goals from captain Harrison Plumb, Alex Williams and Lewis Evison put the visitors in control before Acton’s Niall Challoner replied with a penalty close to half time.
Thomas Edwards reduced the deficit to 3-2 just three minutes into the second half, and there was no further score until Evan Fowles netted Overton’s fourth with 80 gone.
Challoner hit back for Acton on 83 to set up a tense finish.
Bellevue 0 Aston Park Rangers 5
Daniel Dobrev (2), Anthony Weaver (2, 1 pen) and Goss Quinn split the goals which delivered victory for Aston Park.
Brymbo 3 Holywell United 0
A well drilled Steelmen side banked three points at the expense of Holywell United.
The MW Car & Commercial Man of the Match was Niall Roberts, who was a Rolls Royce at the back.
Toby Hughes added another brace to his tally for the season, while Adam Woosey notched a single.
Alex Mihai kept another clean sheet for the hosts.
Sychdyn United 9 Skippy 1
Joe Mitchell made it 11 goals in his last three games with another four in a thumping win for Sychdyn.
A deserved man of the match award went to Mitchell, who has notched 22 league goals in 15 matches.
Jordan Walker’s brace in the first half saw Sychdyn take an early lead and returning player Aaron North did the same with his pair at the opposite end of the 90 minutes.
Jac Robins also struck for the hosts, while Callum Edwards bagged Skippy’s consolation.
Yr Wyddgrug 1 Rhydymwyn 7
Kallum Pierce and Dylan Roberts scored two apiece for resounding victors Rhydymwyn, Ryan Davies, Nathan Williams and Thomas Chamberlain adding a single apiece, Lewis James replying.

Reserve Division Group A
Penycae Reserves 4 Corwen Reserves 2
Captain Josh Hughes, Jason Williams, Lewis Wilcox and Tommy Hallam shared the goals in this Penycae victory, James Davies and Harry Pooler replying.
Ruthin Town Colts 1 Mynydd Isa Reserves 3

The youthful Colts hosted an experienced and well-drilled Mynydd Isa side on Saturday.
The second-place visitors took an early lead through Oliver Howarth, and deservedly doubled it three minutes later courtesy of Joseph Jones.
Colts looked nervy, and rattled by this opening 13 minutes had to withstand a barrage of attacks from the visitors, with 16-year-old Efan Hughes making some superb saves along the way.
However, Ruthin pulled a goal back courtesy of Seth Evans, after some neat build up play and a great assist from Harri Lewis-Jones.
This came against the run of play, but certainly put a seed of doubt in the minds of the visiting side.
Ruthin played their best football for some time in the second half and looked for their equaliser, but it was all in vain. It is fair to say the Colts halved the deficit against the run of play, and it’s also fair to say Mynydd Isa’s third came against the run of play.
In stoppage time, Ruthin were throwing the kitchen sink at Isa, but the visitors managed to counter superbly and Cameron Anderson finished after an initial stop from the outstanding Efan Hughes.
Efan Hughes was a definite MOM candidate for the Colts in what was probably his best game of his debut season in adult football.
Saltney Town Reserves 0 CPD Rhos Aelwyd Reserves 8
Eight without reply for the visitors, James Rumsey with a hat-trick, Jack Honey and Carwyn Davies two apiece and Alfie Owens with a single.
Reserve Division Group B
Greenfield Reserves 1 Connah’s Quay Town XI 1
Liam Wild handed Town an early lead but Greenfield levelled before half time and took a point.
Lex Reserves 2 Coedpoeth United Reserves 6
Iwan Bennett (3, 1 pen) and Ben Griffiths were among the scorers for Coedpoeth, Michael Parry and Alex Palmer the Law net-finders.
Penyffordd Lions Reserves 6 FC Queen’s Park Reserves 0
Jacob Melo-Farina was a four-goal star for Penyffordd, Lewis Dallimore and Kai Welch contributing one apiece for the clear winners.
