50 league games unbeaten – Trearddur Bay are North Wales’ answer to Leverkusen!

Germany’s Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are the talk of world football with their amazing undefeated streak.
Xabi Alonso’s invincibles routed hosts VfL Bochum 5-0 on Sunday to stretch their remarkable unbeaten run across all competitions this season to 50 consecutive matches – a European record.
On a considerably lower level, but majorly impressive all the same, Trearddur Bay made it 50 league matches without loss on Wednesday night.
Since re-forming at the start of 2022-23 and also rebranding, dropping the United to become simply Trearddur Bay, the Ynys Môn-based club are yet to lose a league fixture.
In their debut season, they won 24 and drew two of their 26 matches, finishing up champions of the Tier 5 North Wales Coast West Division One.
Meanwhile in the current campaign, the Beach Boys reached the big 50 this week by beating Cemaes Bay 2-1, making it 21 wins, three draws and no losses in 2023-24 and back-to-back league titles already in the bag. They still have four league matches to complete.

Yes, Trearddur Bay have a strong squad which some might say should do well, but it comprises on the whole a few of Anglesey’s best players, some brilliant youngsters, plus the added experience of former Welsh Premier League star Les Davies, still a class act but now 39 years of age.
I’ve heard or read detractors talking about “money being thrown around” at Lon Isallt, but without genuine facts to back it up.
It is the case with football in general, that any team doing exceptionally well gets the ‘cash card’ thrown at them. Maybe in some cases it makes a difference, but sometimes there are instances of clubs simply getting together a strong pool of players and doing really well.
Any team which signs North Wales football’s most prolific marksman Asa Thomas, a deadly net-finder at Tier 4 and 5 level and in the past T3, has a great chance of winning the league.

Trearddur have benefited from the 700+ goal legend’s finishing ability for the past two seasons; before that it was Bodedern Athletic and previously Morawelon and the original Trearddur Bay United among others.
But as Asa will tell you himself, it is not all about him. There are numerous quality players at the club as well as a thriving development side, many of whom have made major strides this season in the firsts when called upon.
It’s been far from easy for Bay in Tier 4. Their success in cups has left them with a chronic league fixtures backlog, they have had problems with players availability and injuries, yet still remain unbeaten in 24 games having won away against top teams such as Menai Bridge Tigers, Llanrug United, Nefyn United, Gwalchmai and Llanberis.
Trearddur Bay are not just flourishing in the present, they are building for the future, If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it 50 times, they deserve respect.
FOOTNOTE
As a matter of interest, Arsenal went a record 49 consecutive top-flight league games unbeaten from May 2003 to October 2004, breaking Nottingham Forest’s previous record of 42 set between November 1977 and November 1978.
The Gunners’ run ended in controversy at Old Trafford as a disputed penalty spurred Manchester United to a 2-0 win in October 2004.
