One of the genuine surprise results of the weekend – no disrespect to the winners – saw Tier 4 Corwen thrash Tier 3 Ardal North East leaders Llansantffraid out of sight in the FAW Trophy.

The home side from the North East Wales Premier Division started well.

In the 11th minute, Robbie Williams’ angled shot went beyond keeper David Jones, but was cleared off the line and the ball rebounded into the path of Tom Mann, making his second debut for Corwen, who saw his effort saved.

In the 15th minute, during a corner scramble the ball found its way to Les Brophy, who set up Henry Evans to open the scoring.

Two minutes later, Corwen cut through the Llansantffraid defence, Robbie Williams playing the ball onto Joseph Ephraim, who found the back of the net.

James Clewlow tried to half the deficit, but his powerful curled effort went wide of the far post.

With 34 minutes gone, Corwen played out from the back and when they reached the Llansantffraid area, Henry Evans crossed for Mann to brilliantly head the ball over Jones to make the score 3-0

Llansantffraid did their best to get back into the game after the break, but the hosts defended well.

Both sides were reduced 10 men on 72 minutes when Corwen’s Brophy and Oscar Herd for the visitors were red-carded.

As the tie entered the final quarter of an hour, Mann ran with the ball down the wing, leaving two defenders in his wake before crossing to Owen Cordiner, who curled home Corwen’s fourth.

In the closing stages the hosts inflicted more punishment on their visitors, as Henry Evans ran with the ball, before playing a one-two with Robbie Williams and firing home from just inside the penalty area.

Corwen were not done. A minute later they really rubbed salt into the wound, as Cordiner fed Robbie Williams, who made it a half dozen goals for the day.
