When it comes to ranking the Welsh Cup performance of the weekend, Llysfaen’s amazing comeback at Llansannan has to be right up there.
To trail a higher division side 2-0 with only a few minutes to go and come back to win 3-2 is a remarkable effort.
The achievement reminded me of the 2019-20 season, when Llysfaen had their best campaign to date.
In a season cut short in March 2020 due to Covid, Emlyn Robert Jones’ side were cruelly pipped to the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One title on the average points-per-game method.
They went undefeated in Division One and progressed unbeaten in 18 matches in all competitions before losing what turned out to be their final game against Bangor 1876 in the NWCFA Junior Cup.
Llysfaen were the last team in senior North Wales football to lose an undefeated record in 2019-20.
Things have been tough since then, with last season quite a struggle, but some good summer signings have given Llysfaen a new lease of life.
Although second favourites at tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier side Llansannan, the visitors did not deserve to be two-down until so late in the tie.
They had missed some great chances and struck the woodwork four times before that amazing ending.
In the 87th minute, home keeper Barney Murray smothered a through ball, but Ashley Black managed to set up Lee Fallas to lash confidently into the net.
The door was open for a stunning turnaround and a minute later Sam Rogerson delivered a cracking ball into the path of the predatory Sean Sheridan, who applied the finish for 2-2.
Then in added time, Dan Batey lofted the ball from the right towards Sheridan, who managed to poke it past the advancing Murray and find the net.
As they say…..SCENES!
This is what the Welsh Cup is all about.
