Denbigh Town returned to Central Park for the first time since May as they played out their second pre-season friendly of the summer.

Elen James-Owen’s strike wasn’t enough on the afternoon however, as Denbigh fell to a 3-1 defeat on home turf to Frodsham.

Ellen Lawson named a number of young up-and-comers alongside new additions as her recruitment drive for the summer continues at LL16.

Denbigh battle for the ball

The game kicked off in dry conditions but within the opening 10 minutes Cheshire Women’s and Youth Football League side Frodsham took the lead with a superb finish following a defence-splitting pass.

Denbigh found themselves under the cosh but persevered before James-Owen responded superbly with a fine effort from the right that left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

Town grew and grew into the game but were hit with a sucker punch shortly after levelling as Frodsham worked the ball into the box well before finding the net from close range.

The second half saw the heavens well and truly open but the chances themselves dried up.

Denbigh goalkeeper Young pulled off a string of superb saves to thwart the Cheshire visitors but eventually, they did find a third with a tidy finish midway through the second period.

With just two minutes to play Frodsham were awarded a relatively soft penalty but that too was saved superbly by Young to deny a fourth.

Backed by a healthy crowd at Central Park, Denbigh will soon continue their pre-season ahead of their 2023-24 campaign in the North Wales Women’s Football League.
