Five great weekend performances on the North Wales football scene

The greatest result in Llysfaen’s history has set them up for an even bigger tie at home to Bangor 1876 in the NWCFA Junior Cup quarter-finals.

Emlyn Robert Jones’ side were massive underdogs travelling to a Nefyn outfit operating at a level above them on Saturday.

But the reality is the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy Division One leaders won far more comfortably than the scoreline suggests.

Leading 3-0 at the break, Llysfaen were 4-1 up entering injury time courtesy of a four-goal salvo from the prolific Sean Sheridan.

Nefyn managed to net twice in added time, but the visitors held on for a fantastic triumph against the 2018 Junior Cup winners.

After six games without a win, this was a priceless result for Llangefni on a ground where getting a result is never easy.

Iwan Jones opened the visitors’ account on 10 minutes, then Steven Jones added a second after 38 to put the islanders in command at half time.

Cefni could have boosted their tally after the break, Dan Stephens denying Mel McGinness with a stunning last-ditch tackle as an open net beckoned.

Tudno finally pulled a goal back in the 88th minute, but it was too late to save them.

Yet again the Cymru North leaders showed their true mettle when the chips were down to move 16 points clear at the top.

Danny Davies’ brilliant finish on the hour was enough to secure the Seasiders a double over their nearest challengers.

This weekend’s Welsh Cup quarter-final between the same sides at the Essity Stadium should be quite a contest!

Llannefydd 2 Aberffraw 3

Aberffraw may have struggled near the bottom of Welsh Alliance Division Two all season, but they cannot stop causing cup upsets.

Berffro edged a cracking 3-2 victory at Llannefydd, Gary Bolton, Nathan Moore and Matty Reynolds grabbing the visiting goals.

Gerallt Roberts’ side now face a massive test at Holyhead Hotspur in the quarter-finals, however Aberffraw have already met the Welsh Alliance Division One leaders previously this term in the FAW Trophy and pushed them all the way into extra time only to lose 2-1, so they have nothing to fear.

Usually, the teams which win praise in this feature have been victorious in the game, but that was not the case with this clash.

However, Holyhead Town deserve massive plaudits for pushing the Anglesey League leaders so close.

At the start of the season, Bay annihilated Town, admittedly a fully-fledged reserves side at the time 20-0.

The team which played on Saturday is now Holyhead’s first team, but all the same they are a developing, largely inexperienced side. Most of the Holyhead players who were in the first team at the start of the season have joined other clubs.

The current Harbourmen are a team very much in transition, but gave the leaders a real battle, Rob Thomas their scorer on 46 minutes.

Cemaes won it with a very late clincher from Andy Williams.
