History was made as the Crusaders Women played their first-ever rugby league match – and it was a winning occasion.
Just two months after their first training session, head coach, Salford Red Devils and Wales player Becki Davies and her team, have got the new side off to a flyer.
Taking on Heysham Atoms at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay, the Crusaders ran out 28-18 winners.
Bangor University club captain Eloise Kirby scored two tries, while Codie Slack, Llandudno FC player Becky Jarvis-Evans and student star Bea O’Neill also went over. Sioned Phillips, who had an outstanding game, kicked eight points.
Coach Davies said after the game: “You could tell the girls were nervous going into it, and even in the first 5-10 minutes the nerves were evident.
“We played quite “frantic” which led to a few mistakes and Heysham scoring an early try. As the game progressed, the nerves left and the girls found their flow. The Cru team that was on that pitch in minute 1 was a completely different team to that in minute 40.
“They defended hard and put their bodies on the line. They worked well in attack and formed a good structure to score and ultimately get the win that they SO deserved.”
Becki added: “Heysham gave us a good competitive game and credit to them for being such a great opposition. We’re looking forward to playing them again in August up in their neck of the woods.”
Next up for the Crusaders is Oldham at home on June 25.
