Gwalchmai teen Connor Owen ends season with 36 goals from 34 games – but for once he was upstaged this week by a 39-year-old!

Teenager Connor Owen ended a sensational season for Gwalchmai in fitting style with a two-goal show in his team’s 7-1 thrashing of Pentraeth on Tuesday night.

The 18-year-old Owen came on as a 49th minute substitute at Maes Meurig and scored twice to bring his end of season goals tally to an amazing 36 goals in 34 games covering all competitions.

His double in the final match of the season ensured Connor finished top scorer in the tier 4 North Wales Coast West League Premier Division with 24 goals.

Just consider the quality of striker he finished above.

Luke Baum (Talysarn Celts) 23
Carl Jones (CPD Pwllheli) 20
Kevin Lloyd (Llanrug United) 20

To score 36 goals in a season at any age is excellent, but to do it at 18 in something special.

In fact, Connor was 17 for the most of the campaign, having not reached the age of 18 until April.

He notched four hat-tricks during 2022-23, three of them coming in consecutive games.

At one point he scored in seven matches in a row.

While Gwalchmai as a team had a fairly ordinary season as a whole, finishing ninth in the Premier, their young star striker was beyond awesome.

However, while the goals of 18-year-old Owen is the story of the season at Maes Meurig, consider the fact even the young wizard was outscored on Tuesday – by someone more than twice his age!

Player-manager Craig Evans scored a hat-trick inside the final half hour against Pentraeth – his first league goals of this season!

Also on target were Gwion Thomas and Sam Jones, Jay Finter responding for the visitors.
