CATCH-UP REPORTS – SATURDAY, MAY 13

NORTH WALES COAST EAST LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

St Asaph City 3 Rhuddlan Town 2

Champions by a huge 17-point margin, 5-0 winners in the Cookson Cup Final and targeting a treble this weekend – there is something very Manchester City-like about this season for St Asaph City.

The Roe Plas Meadows outfit will land a third trophy of 2022-23 if they defeat Menai Bridge Tigers in the NWCFA Intermediate Challenge Cup Final at Penmaenmawr on Saturday.

There is no reason at all to doubt Saints will do it – they are undefeated in 18 matches, 17 wins and a draw.

Menai Bridge have had a solid but unspectacular season in the tier 4 North Wales Coast West Premier Division, with a sixth-place finish likely.

One never knows of course with cup finals; it’s all about on the day and no doubt the Tigers are capable of a big showing, but the odds favour Asaph.

Crowned champions 10 days earlier, Saints completed their league campaign with a 3-2 win over Rhuddlan Town last Saturday.

It was very fitting that their third and last goal on the day was their 100th in the league this term.

Josh Brown gave the hosts a second-minute lead, but Jay Whitehouse levelled on seven.

Here’s a man who knows all about winning trophies. St Asaph’s veteran defender David Hayes. Picture: Matt Johnson

Brown struck again from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute, but Wayne Hughes made it all-square on 77.

While the result was academic, a victory was what City wanted in front of their own fans and an instant impact was made by substitute Kieran Garnett Hughes, who notched the winner.

Very worthy champions indeed. No-one got near them. The Saints go marching up to tier three.
