Report: Jonathan Ervine
Bangor 1876 fell to their first ever home league defeat after conceding two late goals to visitors Llangefni.
The Anglesey side looked lively up front in the early stages under the floodlights at Treborth and on several occasions were only denied by last-ditch tackles.
With under 10 minutes on the clock, Matty Jones had a shot on target for the islanders but his free-kick was comfortably caught by Carl Jones.
At the other end, Liam Morris once again looked lively for 1876. Shortly before the midway point in the opening period he twice came close to scoring. Firstly, he sent a powerful shot just over the bar following a knock down from Les Davies before heading over a cross from Corrig McGonigle.
Just before the half hour mark, 1876 again went close. Following a free-kick on the left, Morris, Davies and Corey Jones all had shots blocked from close range as the referee waved away handball claims during a goalmouth scramble.
The last 15 minutes of the opening period saw a flurry of further chances.
McGoingle twice had opportunities from free-kicks, the first of which he floated wide and the second saw him rattle the crossbar.
In between these two attempts, Morris had a goal disallowed for offside after finding the net from a tight angle following a pass by Kian Owen.
As half time approached an Owen cross found the head of Davies at the back post but his effort went narrowly wide.
Llangefni’s Matty Jones fired a shot just past the post after breaking into the box following a swift counter attack.
In the final minute of the half, the ball ended up in the Llangefni net after goalkeeper Steve Sinclair dropped it following an inswinging effort, but the referee ruled the goal out due to a foul.
In the second period, home striker Davies blasted a powerful shot just over the bar from over 25 yards out. Not long afterwards,
Sinclair made a good save with his feet after Morris broke into the penalty area.
Llangefni competed well and threatened on several occasions. Just after the hour mark, midfielder Dewi Thomas took a shot from 20 yards out but his attempt was saved by Jones.
In the 73rd minute, the deadlock was broken as a player from Anglesey gave Bangor 1876 the lead. After a cross by Jamie Petrie from the right wing was initially blocked, the ball was worked back across the penalty area to Morris who scored with a powerful low shot.
However, the lead lasted under 10 minutes as Llangefni applied the pressure and equalised. After the ball was cut back from the left side, a scramble ensued and Gerwyn Roberts scored from close range with an overhead flick.
Neither side appeared content to settle for a point as both pressed for a winner in the wind and the rain.
In injury time, Thomas broke into the right side of the penalty area and was fouled by Kian Owen. The referee pointed to the spot and sent off Owen, who had previously been booked for a foul at the other end of the field.
Matty Jones made no mistake with his penalty kick as he dispatched it low into the bottom left corner to clinch a dramatic victory for the visitors.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish Llangefni well for the remainder of the reason. Our next game is away to Denbigh Town in the league at 7.30pm on Friday 24 February.
